Support Trans Educators!

Donation protected
The recent Supreme Court Case has highlighted how precarious employment can be for trans people. According to the National Center for Trans Equality, more than 1 in 6 trans people has been fired because of their trans status.

The Trans Educators Network (TEN), founded in 2015 in the Bay Area, is a mutual aid organization for trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and genderqueer teachers to support one another.  Among a small number of professional organizations for trans folks, we have over 500 members who are all PK-12 teachers across the US and Canada.

As a vulnerable population within the teaching force, we need resources to help us get and keep our jobs as educators,  and help us access adequate health care and legal support. We need to build community that will keep us in the work of education.

We also seek to build capacity and collective knowledge among trans educators so that we can more effectively use our powerful position as teachers to support trans and gender non-conforming people who are more vulnerable than we are, particularly queer and trans youth of color, disabled youth, (im)migrant and refugee youth, and youth directly impacted by incarceration, poverty, and violence.

Over the last year, with an annual operating budget of approximately $5000 drawn entirely from grassroots donations, TEN has:

- Created a Core Leadership Collective of 9 trans educators from Hawai'i to New York City with organizing experience at the nexus of trans and racial justice in education. The Core Collective, which maintains a majority of people of color, helps to organize and steer the group.

- Maintained local chapters in major cities across the United States for trans educators to gather in person and support each other, as well as an online listserv for resource sharing.

- Created a website (www.transeducators.com) for members to connect with each other and with relevant resources. For example, we are currently developing resource kits and guides for school administrators seeking to support trans employees, and for educators to identify children's literature that is useful for talking about gender and racial justice in tandem.

The funds generated by this annual fundraiser will used to pay Core Collective members for their labor and to maintain and grow resources on our website.
