Youth Unemployment Is Too High In Jamaica
Almost 40% of young men in Jamaica 20-25 years old are not working. While most youth do engage with music or entertainment, informal or no training is preventing regular and long term employment. However, the cultural sector in Jamaica has been identified as a trade sector poised for growth. General education and training have proven to be powerful growth engines.
Alpha Offers A Solution Based On Experience
Alpha's 138 years of vocational training for youth is respected worldwide and Alpha past students have been innovators and pioneers across genres (Dizzy Reece, Yellowman, Cedric Brooks and Johnnie Osbourne to name a few). Today, the Alpha Institute is the only educational institution that offers music performance and technology employment training to unattached youth 16-21 years old complimented by holistic social support as well as math and English instruction. Students are admitted based on need and receive targeted support services including transportation, nutrition and lodging if necessary.
Why Alpha Needs Our Help
Our support is needed to to build a multi purpose music instruction room. Alpha currently has one room for all music instruction. The multi purpose room will improve learning and social outcomes, provide for more efficient instruction, communication and growth as a musician in a shorter frame of time. Intensive vocational training in music with a focus on music literacy will directly impact employment since employers, particularly in tourism, where musicians who can read music are the ones who get the jobs. By increasing the usable space, a multi-purpose music room will allow Alpha to target its resources to more young people and in more communities.

Led by The Sisters of Mercy with a focus on youth social welfare, education and employment training, a comprehensive curriculum and the staff to offer a world of possibilities to at risk youth, Alpha is poised to transform music education and employment for the 21st century in Kingston.
