Tracy's Legacy Scholarship

6 years ago today, my mom’s life was taken in a murder-suicide that stemmed from Domestic Violence. She was 38 years old and had a bright future ahead of her. You read more here: http://www.naturallydaj.com/blog/2016/10/13/the-day-my-life-changed

Many people do not know that I (24) am the guardian of my siblings (18, 14). Though times may be tough, we are thankful to have one another and finally get to a place were we can make lemonade with our lemons. 6 years later, my siblings and I are blessed to be able to carry on her legacy & we choose to honor her life by sharing her love and light with other people. Our mom loved to give back, and worked diligently to be able to do so. Education was something that she never took for granted, and held near and dear to her heart.

At the time of her passing,my mom was in the final semester of her Master’s program to become a Nurse Practitioner, which was her dream. My siblings and I accepted her degree on her behalf. As the dean said, commencement means beginning. But, since this won't be a beginning for her, we are making sure this means a beginning for someone else. We know the hardships of not knowing how we would be able to pay for school, not knowing how we would make it through another day, and not knowing how to ask for support.  We are fundraising for the Tracy’s Legacy scholarship, which will be given to two resilient high school students that have overcome adversity. Please support us in our efforts by donating, or sharing this post with other people.

Below is an exert from my mom's scholarship acceptance speech from her BSN program :

As a child of immigrant parents, it was always instilled in me to be ambitious and to strive for the best. I started my career as a medical assistant. This challenged me to feel confident about my career, and to pursue more in the medical field. I decided to enroll in a LPN program. I worked as a LPN in a dialysis unit for 5 years at Winthrop University Hospital. This is where my milestone began. I still was not satisfied because of my starvation for more knowledge, and the need for growth and development in my career as a nurse. As I continued to build on my skills in the practical field I realized the importance of the medical profession in its entirety, and the need for improving the level of care in the health care system. I went back to school and I attended Helen Fuld College of Nursing, where I received my Associate’s degree in nursing.  I took my state board within a month and a half of graduation and I was successful. That was a big accomplishment for me.I am now pursuing my Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at St. Joseph’s College. Upon completion of such, I intend to continue to get my master’s degree as nurse practitioner.

In my every day professional practice as a nurse, my ultimate focus is directed toward caring for my patients in making sure that all of his/her needs are met holistically. It gives me great pleasure to know that at the end of my shift I have done the best for that individual. It does not matter what state or condition he/she is in, whether ambulatory, bedbound, alert, confused, or non verbal, each and every patient is treated equally with respect and dignity.

Team-work is essential in the nursing profession and this is quite evident in the cohesiveness that is shown among my colleagues at Winthrop University Hospital. All nurses should strive to be team players. The most satisfying aspect of my work to see the look of gratitude on my patients faces when their needs are met in a timely and effective manner. Hearing the words “thank you” makes being a nurse worthwhile.

We love you, mom.
