XORJE OLIVARES AND HEYXORJE.COM TEAM UP WITH REFUGEE SERVICES OF TEXAS

Not Just a Toy Campaign

With the disturbing images of emigrating families struggling to breathe amid government-sanctioned tear-gassing, and federal agencies using their authority in a way that amounts to complicity that is beyond infuriating, Xorje Olivares has taken on a new mission. Partnering up with Refugee Services of Texas (RST), Xorje’s campaign project “Toys for Tornillo” (#Toys4Tornillo) has expanded to deliver more than just toys this holiday.  The new campaign, “Not Just a Toy” (#NotJustAToy) has begun collecting cash donations for a variety of immigrant groups in Texas and will continue through December 18.

Please make a contribution that best suits your budget. Any amount you donate is greatly appreciated, but if you need some suggestions, consider these:

$25 = Welcome Meal for an arriving family
$50 = month’s worth of public transportation
$75 = week’s worth groceries for a family
$100 = 5 hours of interpretation for intake interviews
$500 = emergency medical services for an unaccompanied minor
$1,000 = mother & child application for citizenship
$1,500 = furnish an apartment for a new refugee family

RST recently celebrated its fortieth year of providing direct services to displaced persons now living in the United States, including refugees, asylees and survivors of human trafficking. With six sites across the state, including a developing site in the Rio Grande Valley, RST served 1,158 clients last year, including 40 percent of the refugees resettled in the state. Funds raised through “Not Just a Toy” will give clients in the Rio Grande Valley a chance to achieve self-sufficiency with dignity, after a long and arduous journey of victimization and persecution.

“Imagine being met with violence after traveling hundreds of miles to escape it,” exclaims Xorje Olivares, host of Affirmative Reaction on SiriusXM Progress Channel 127 (Saturdays 12p ET). “Then, imagine after spending weeks reassuring your children that freedom is near, having to run for safety but not knowing where to run -- since you're strangers in the borderland. Survival and asking for asylum should NEVER be this hard and yet here we are.”

“The entire immigration situation, as it's being handled by our current administration, fuels my activism as a border native, as it does countless others nationwide…” says Xorje “Nearly 44,000 immigrants in detention, roughly 14,000 of which are youth, it's apparent that a lot needs to be done to assist those who are either lost in the system or victims of a broken one.”

Together, Xorje Olivares, HeyXorje.com, and Refugee Services of Texas are on a mission to raise enough to impact those from Mexico and far beyond who are seeking a route to safety in the U.S. Funds will be used to support clients’ basic needs including shelter, food, clothing, healthcare and legal assistance. Service recipients receive case management services and employment assistance, as well as ascultural orientation and English classes through RST.

“Our clients come with no other physical belongings than the clothes on their backs,” says RST CEO, Russell Smith.  “We want to give them a wonderful holiday this year, but more than just toys are needed. With recent cuts in federal funding and a record low cap on the number of refugees entering the country, we need the people of Texas to rally around refugees and displaced peoples and show them that we are a place of refuge and support.”

PLEASE DONATE NOW.  THANK YOU

We've Teamed Up With Refugee Services of Texas.

The holidays are a time of coming together and acting in love, showing one another how the spirit of Christmas is alive and well and moving within us all. In keeping with this feeling, we are beyond excited to partner with Refugee Services of Texas, which is similarly looking to transform this trying moment for thousands of our immigrant brothers and sisters, into one of joy and happiness.

The work RST does daily motivates me to do better and to hopefully engage those looking to do the same. Please take this moment and commemorate our partnership with Refugee Services of Texas with a generous contribution. If you've already made a contribution -- thank you! Remember to share, post, or tweet the good news to your family, friends and followers.

Thank you,
XO, Team HeyXorje.com, and Refugee Services of Texas

PLEASE GIVE!
As we transition from the Thanksgiving break into the heart of the Christmas season, I'm once again reminded about the importance of family and community, especially at such an unprecedented moment in our nation's history.

With our federal government authorizing the gassing of hundreds of potential asylum seekers (including dozens of children) along the US-Mexico border, my homeland, over the weekend, it's become increasingly apparent that the Trump administration has declared war not just on undocumented people but on the Latino population, as a whole. Aside from erroneously claiming he can permanently shut down our borders to prevent their arrival, Trump is still lying about the fact that he, not President Obama, first implemented the family separation policy.

That policy, which is being enforced with a lack of empathy by DC's most revolting, has produced 14,000 detained youth, a good portion of which now reside at the makeshift tent city in Tornillo, Texas. Though the Tornillo center is the largest of its kind, it's most certainly not the only one--there are scared, traumatized immigrant kids scattered around this country with no concrete idea as to what their future holds.

But hopefully, with your help, we can at least guarantee them a more joyful Christmas. We are still in the process of gathering generous donations to purchase toys for those afflicted by the White House's cruelty, and I'd love to be able to include you in the growing list of benefactors similarly outraged by what we're witnessing. We've been blessed by the outpouring of support so far, and we thank you for that!

Now's the time for us to speak up and show both Trump and his cowardly cohorts that we won't sit quietly as he cages those brave enough to choose survival over suppression. If you haven't already done so, please consider making a donation or share our campaign with those you know. Let's join together and uplift our fellow humans this holiday.
