It really hits home when it’s one of your own, right?
Last year, our man Scott Driscoll, Figurehead Project Coordinator and all round legend, developed testicular cancer. While it was a non-aggressive form caught early enough not to have spread, it did require the removal of his right testicle.
Scott now lives with a large scar, one testicle and significantly reduced fertility due to calcification of the sperm ducts.
Along with regular urologist check-ups, Scott battles the “why me?” nature of his ordeal. The physical scars are obvious, the mental ones less so.
The facts:
• Testicular cancer is the second most common cancer in young men aged 18 to 39.
• The rate of diagnosis has grown by more than 50% over the past 30 years.
• Doctors currently have no explanation for this.
Figurehead are joining Scott in advocating for the early detection and prevention of cancer by way of a fundraising event for Movember - one of the leading charity organisations raising the profile of men’s health.
Beginning Thursday the 25th of July, we’re holding the inaugural Tour de Figurehead.
Following stages 17 and 18 of the actual Tour de France, we’ll be cycling our way to glory over the ensuing days on a stationary exercise bike. Tag teaming over the course of each day, we intend to copy the amount of kilometres cycled over the tour during 30 minute continuous sessions.
And just so you know how intense that is, it’s over 400km across two days.
We’re aiming to raise $10,000 for Movember whose work includes finding and funding the most innovative available research into the biggest health issues impacting men today: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
