My Harvard Dream

Hello, my name is Tory Lipsey and I am a native of Union, Alabama. Growing up in a  household as the youngest of 12 siblings came with its fair share of challenges; I survived on one meal per day, wore the same clothes to school every day, and lived in a trailer with my family. I remember dropping out of high school to take the GED exam so I can get a job to help provide for my family. I passed upon my first trial. It was an indication that I had the power to change my situation.

In 2008, I moved to New York. I did not know why exactly I was moving at that time-but, I knew something had to change. I couch hopped for 2 years in NYC, until I was able to afford a shared room from working 3 jobs. I applied to a nonprofit professional development organization called, “Year Up New York:” they provide hands-on training, mentorship, tertiary education coursework, and college enrollment opportunities to low-income young adults. Through Year-up New York, I was able to do what initially seemed impossible- I got accepted into Syracuse University to pursue a bachelor's degree in Psychology.  4 years later, I became the first person in my family to earn a college degree. It was a rewarding feeling; I felt I could achieve anything I set my mind on.  Since then, I joined my alumni executive board, and I am currently working on my tech startup.

Recently, I got accepted into Harvard Business School to pursue an extension program that will result in earning an MBA. While this is a milestone accomplishment, a familiar roadblock presented itself again- money. A degree from Harvard will not only further enhance my credentials, but also create opportunities that will help me rise to my full potential. Harvard has a vast network of alumni that have accomplished great things and I want to be one of them.

The cost of tuition is $35,000  which will cover 12 courses over a 2-year period. My goal is to raise $45,000  before December 31st, 2017. This will help cover tuition, housing, and books. With your donation, I will be able to fulfill a dream I never thought was attainable. I will be a Harvard Business school alumnus. With that achievement, comes a responsibility to bend the world in shapes I want to see. I intend to expand my network and use my platform to help marginalized communities. As someone who has experienced being homeless for years, I want to utilize resources at my disposal to help the thousands of homeless people in NYC. One of the things I plan on doing is to create a mobile unit that is designed to provide people without homes privacy to wash themselves and their clothes. Most public restrooms have access codes and other restrictions that only allow patrons of their businesses. I also want to create a safe online marketplace that will enable people to rent their homes, and hostels to homeless people to shower and clean up at no cost. With this kind of provision, we can extend hope and optimism. I also have political aspirations in the future. I am a firm believer in representation and being the change you want to see. I plan to grow my startup into a successful business that will provide employment opportunities, access to emerging technology platforms and bridge the divide that exists within minority communities and our access to opportunities.

Donating to my campaign will not only fund my Harvard education but help make a vision that will impact the lives of people a reality.
