Kelly Johnston will participate in the Post Graduate Residency at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA in fall 2018 and the Emerging Regional Artist Residency in Raleigh NC in 2019.

I am asking for your support of $4,500 as I work to fund my Post Graduate Residency at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA in fall 2018. This will help with studio and equipment rentals, materials, launching my new website as well as relocation and travel expenses, housing and living expenses and promotion.
When I was a child, the Torpedo Factory was one the first arts organizations I visited. Though I was there for a brief time, I was exposed to the vibrant lives working artists lead. That moment has inspired my lifelong passion for the arts. Since then, participating in a residency at the Torpedo Factory has become one of my personal and professional ambitions. This residency has the potential to be a turning point in my development as a professional artist.
Upon my return in January 2019, I will begin the Emerging Regional Artist Residency at Artspace in Raleigh, NC. During the six month residency, I will provide workshops on Professional Development for Emerging Artists, and Casting and Materials workshops around the Triangle at low or no cost.

Based in Chapel Hill, NC, Johnston has exhibited nationally and internationally, including Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Flux Factory in NYC, the Target Gallery in Alexandria, VA and has shown extensively in the southwest. Her work explores inherent tensions between emotional and physical discomfort. By using natural materials on large scales to create sculpture and installation, she hopes her viewers connect and address issues in their own lives. Her use of identity objects, such as hair and teeth, can be seen as a common materials throughout her work, along with incorporating mixed-media to create visceral environments
