Gay Pride in Zambia

The Status of LGBTI Rights in Zambia

The current climate of LGBTI rights in Zambia is incredibly hostile. According to CAP 87 sections 155 to 158 of the Penal Code of Zambia, homosexuality is punishable by 14 years imprisonment. Current government officials have spoken out strongly against gay rights, despite pressure from donor countries that provide essential aid to the country. Human rights defenders who speak out against discrimination related to sexual orientation and gender identity have been systematically silenced. Ever since the establishment of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and National Guidance in 2016, the persecution of LGBTI persons and sex workers has increased. Each time there is an incident with a member of the LGBTI community, the Ministry condemns association or affiliations with ‘immoral activities’.

Why a Gay Pride in Zambia?

A Gay Pride is a demonstration against this marginalization and discrimination. By organizing a Gay Pride and showing our presence in the street we hope to shift what is acceptable discourse. We also hope to inspire young LGBTI people that they do not have a problem. That they are not sick. But that there are many others out there just like them and that they can be proud of who they are. In the past demonstrations and gay pride marches have been a successful instrument by LGBTI movements across the world in shifting discourse and spreading acceptance.

How will we organize a Gay Pride?

During his stay in the Netherlands Tino has meetings with Dutch LGBTI activists to learn from their experiences and best practices, both the organizers of the current Gay Pride, but also organizers of previous historical Gay Prides. Tino also hopes to meet LGBTI activists from across the world who have organized Gay Prides in a hostile environment to learn from their experiences and the challenges they have faced.

In Zambia Tino’s organization ZASWA will work together with an alliance of LGBTI organizations, in conjunction with international advisors and NGO’s. All of this has the goal of having a broad coalition of organizations. Within Zambia Tino will work with experienced demonstrators who have organized demonstrations and protest marches before.
