Tina Carlson has helped countless people! She recently was chosen the Citizen's of the Year by the VFW for all of her work raising money and showing appreciation for Police Officers. Now it's our turn to help! Tina had foot surgery and is responsible for paying all of her medical expenses out of pocket . Let's help ease her burden.

23rd Annual Hollis Citizen of the Year award for Tina Carlson at the March 17, 2018 Town Meeting
Today we are recognizing the VFW Citizen of the Year for Americanism.  Each year the VFW picks a person who exemplifies the ideals of Americanism as a Hollis Resident.  This year we have
A very kind and hard-working individual who is a part owner AND operator of a business here in Hollis.
When not working, this person is always available to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. To say there are times they are not working is really not an accurate statement. This person is always busy doing something that will benefit another.
Two years ago our award recipient watched a video about how our Police, Fire and Rescue personnel are not fully appreciated while putting their lives at risk every day and what their Families deal with on a daily basis.  This resulted in a mission to do something to show appreciation for these Men and Women while trying to raise funds to help the cause.
Thus started the Blue Ribbon campaign to show our Police Officers they are appreciated. Our town was decorated with blue ribbons on trees, posts and houses.  Ribbons were provided to those who wanted one which resulted from countless hours making, delivering and installing ribbons.
The next step was to plan a Fund Raiser and Appreciation day. The first one, 2 years ago was for the Hollis and Brookline Police Departments.  Conducting a meeting of volunteers several times a week, these volunteers were fed in a home atmosphere.  Every weekend for months on Saturday and Sunday this person and a volunteer Officer sat outside businesses and sold raffle tickets, dinner tickets and took donations as well as selling raffle tickets for the Auction on the night of the Benefit.  A Family Fun Day was held with games, prizes and raffles ending with a full dinner with music and comedians as well as a line-up of auctions.  Ensuring responders who attended, at no charge, were shown appreciation and the event was a great success and raised a lot of funds.
Our Citizen of the Year followed this up with a similar event for the Town of Bedford which was another success and raised a lot of money for them as well.  Plans are in the works for a similar event in Milford.  The same year another Appreciation Day was organized for the Hollis Police, outdoing what was done the year prior.
Becoming aware of the struggles and pains our responders face while experiencing PTSD, attendance as a seminar on coping with PTSD became a priority even though being the only Lay person in attendance.
During many nights, weekends and long days of all the event planning, our person has remained available to any Friend or Family member to willingly give of their time.
While we invite Tina Carson to step forward and receive this 23rd Annual Citizen of the Year award we want to thank her for the efforts and work she has given over the last 2  ½ years.  This is the least we can do to show our appreciation and her Americanism.   Tina exemplifies the hero in all of us. You need not be a Firemen, Policemen or EMT to be one. Tina Carlson truly is a hero through and through!
