Medical Supplies and Home for Haiti

My name is Thomas Cunningham. I’m a senior at Bishop Kelley High School and a parishioner at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.
As a Brother Bernardine scholar, each senior presents a capstone project during the year. Ever since St. Bernard’s was visited by a traveling priest with stories about the people of Haiti and their struggles, my heart has been touched.
I have chosen to partner with Cross Catholic Outreach on their Kobonal project. This project will allow me to work with a renowned organization to raise money for medical supplies and homes for the people of Haiti.
By partnering with Cross Catholic Outreach on their Medical Mission, I can expand their unique and powerful program. While Cross Catholic Outreach helps with everything from food to medicine, education to housing, I have chosen to focus my involvement on raising money for medicine and housing.
With little nutrition and inadequate shelter, you can imagine how frail the health of the people must be. Particularly at risk are the young and the elderly. Haiti has the highest infant mortality rate in the Americas: Preventable illnesses, such as cholera, tuberculosis and pneumonia are the main causes of deaths in children. Around 100,000 Haitian children aged between 0-17 have lost parental care because of AIDS.
The majority of Haitian families live in one-room mud huts. These huts have dirt floor and cracks in the roof and walls. During rainy season, they fall apart. Cross Catholic Outreach provides the supplies and helps build simple concrete homes. Neighbors pitch in to help build these homes. The home recipients commit to painting and maintaining the home. In addition, they then help build for others. Along with the house comes a plot of land, seeds and instruction on how to farm the land. Often they have enough produce that they can sell it to maintain a living.
I am excited to partner with Cross Catholic Outreach and provide relief to one of our poorest nations in the world.
