Thomas Fire Beekeeping Recovery
Donation protected
The devastating Thomas Fire that burned 270,000 acres of land so far in Ventura County has severely impacted the hives of Mission Beekeeping .
Mission Beekeeping finds happy homes for hives by relocating hives from unsafe areas to farms in Ojai and Ventura, California. This small business is owned by Steve and Kelly Nimmer. They educate and advocate for eco-friendly practices of raising bees.
Over the past two years Mission Beekeeping has saved 150 hives.
At midnight on December 5th, Steve and Kelly Nimmer woke up to learn that the Thomas Fire was approaching Ventura, CA - the location of their bee yard. They raced down and saw the fire over the mountain ridge. With the help of two brave friends, they worked tirelessly to save 70 hives in 6 hours. By 7am, the fire had reached the remaining bee hives.
Steve and Kelly are more than thankful that they were able to evacuate to safety and that the fire miraculously stopped short before reaching their home.
My name is Steph and I am a close friend of Steve & Kelly and was a bridesmaid in their wedding. I live in San Diego and have been following the Nimmers' stressful journey. I know that they are devastated by the loss of their hives. All of the funds raised on this campaign will go to directly to Kelly & Steve's bank account. They plan to use the funds to purchase:
1) Seeds to provide plant diversity in the bee yards that have been burned
2) Queen bees for new colonies that will be split from the colonies that survived
3) Hives from migration beekeepers to keep locally after almond pollination season
Any support for them will save the exisiting bee population. Donations, contributions or volunteering land for the existing hives to thrive is immensly appreciated. (Venmo @missionbeekeeping and PayPal (PayPal.Me/MissionBeekeeping or via this website).
If you would like to find a home for the exisiting hives:
The 75 rescued bee hives were moved from Ventura to Ojai Valley to Carpinteria. The bees will need to be relocated to a coastal property where there is more food. Please let them know if you have a sizable coastal property and are willing to host their hives. Ideally, the property needs to be accessible by a forklift and be able to host at least 20-30 hives together. Their phone number is 805-636-4426 and email is [email redacted].
