The town of York and Think Again were granted "Intervenor Status" with the MDEP to present their case, opposing a new Open Road Toll (ORT) plaza at mile 8.8.
There will be a public hearing on May 22nd in York. The Town and Think Again promote an All Electronic Tolling (AET) solution for the replacement of the current York Toll Plaza.
This MDEP hearing is the culmination of an opposition fight that has persisted for over 10 years!
The York Selectmen have provided $25,000 for legal fees.
We need to raise an additional $25,000 for legal fees and expert witnesses.
We must stop the MTA building an ORT Plaza and wasting $35 million!
Reasons behind the Opposition Effort:
- Permanent environmental damage will result from an ORT Plaza
- ORT lane barriers in roadway create a safety hazard - Increase in air pollution due to trucks and cars stopping at a plaza
- Decrease in value of homes near new ORT plaza due to noise, air and light pollution – 24 hours a day!
- With AET there will be no traffic congestion, due to paying tools, at the Gateway to Maine – a benefit for all travelers & tourism.
- Lower capital costs and reduced tolling costs with AET = more money for maintaining roads and bridges.
- Estimated annual loss of property tax revenue for the town of York – $61,000
