"I’m Mike, aged 42, I live with my amazing partner Becky and the meaning of my life, my son Freddie. I used to play rugby, I now prefer golf. I like going on warm holidays, prefer a pool to a beach (unless the sand is white). I’m self-employed and my business is in good shape but I’m always thinking of ways to wind it down. I have Motor Neurone Disease / ALS but I am going to fight like f**k against it."

This is how our very dear friend Mike broke the news to us.  And when I say us, I am talking about a very special group of people who all went to school together from 1986 to 2001 and since then, have enjoyed countless reunions and some very special bonds of friendship.

So we are devasted, upset and heartbroken to read his news. But we are not going to sit back and do nothing, so within 24 hours of Mike telling us, we are already planning how we can help.

Mike is writing a very honest blog and as part of this blog, has a bucket list.  As a group, we are going to be fundraising in order for him to tick some things off this list.

And one of the first things we are going to be doing is running the Cheltenham Half Marathon on Oct 1st.  For some of us, this will be a relatively easy challenge - for others, this is going to be a major challenge! But as one of us so beautifully summed it up - "I can't run to save my life but if Mike can face something like this I reckon I can hobble round Cheltenham pretending to run"

So if you can donate, we would be so grateful and I know Mike, Becky and Freddie will be too.

Wow - we currently stand at £2,210 which is an amazing achievement. Thank you all so much for your very generous donations. We are on count down now - nerves are kicking in - but in a weird way, I think we are all actually looking forward to it. If you are coming to support us, we are all running in bright orange MNDA vests, so we shouldn't be difficult to miss. Not sure how many of us will talking to Mike afterwards, but we'll see!

We've hit the £1,500 mark with 9 days to go until the big day. Lots of mixed feelings - fear, emotion and excitement - and that's just me! Massive thank you to everyone who has donated so generously - every donation means the world to us, thank you so much.

OK, it's kind of getting a bit more real now as we have less than a month to go before the big day. So much training is happening - we have a Map My Run group and also a Facebook group which have both been invaluable sources of support, as we do our runs, moan about injuries and celebrate each others successes. Our MND vests have been delivered and I personally love how the orange matches my face after each of my runs - you'll certainly be able to spot me when I finally cross that finish lane. Any spare pennies gratefully received.
