The 3.4 million American citizens of Puerto Rico remain in a state of humanitarian crisis after being ravaged by Hurricane Maria on September 20. Basic human needs are not met for thousands including sufficient food, clean drinking water, basic shelter, and access to medical care and supplies. In parts of the island, people are sourcing water from known contaminated wells or drinking untreated stream water which can lead to disease. Most of the island is still without electricity, suffering the longest blackout in American history.
