Support Duho Books--Stories of Us

The Story Begins...
The request was a simple enough: “It's strange how Bahamian writers haven't made a name for themselves internationally, unlike writers from other Caribbean nations. Do you know of any authors you'd recommend?”

I’m Wendy Coakley-Thompson, an author of Bahamian descent, and a book blogger literally stumped me when he asked me that question in 2013. So, in 2017, I founded Duho Books, a boutique publisher based in Washington, D.C. My goal—to give rise to underrepresented authors, stories, and viewpoints related to the Bahamas and Bahamian culture.

Our Mission
Our mission at Duho is unique and long overdue: We want to preserve Bahamian culture through the written word and disseminate it to the world. To that end, Duho plans to publish twelve carefully selected books annually.

Duho Books Meets the World
This past September 2017, Duho released three titles as part of our Fall Collection: Back to Life (15th anniversary edition) by me, Wendy Coakley-Thompson; The Lights of Home, a debut romance novel set in the Bahamas, by Marin Frederique, a Bahamian-American author, like me; and My Name Is Karma, a debut novel by Bahamian author / psychologist N.A. Cash. In such a short time, we’re already making our mark, appearing The Nassau Guardian, the largest and most venerated daily newspaper in the Bahamas. N. A. Cash also spread the word about My Name Is Karma, her debut novel, on Guardian Talk Radio’s Let’s Talk Live. Stateside, we’ve also been gaining traction, featured in publications such as the African American Literature Book Club. Our sales and rankings on Amazon are solid and increase with every day. Duho is poised to up the ante with our Winter Collection, debuting in December 2017, featuring fiction, nonfiction, and photography books that highlight the diversity of the Bahamas, her culture, and her people.  I predict that the appearance of Duho authors on bestseller lists is imminent. Ambitious goals, yes, but, per Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

Why Give?
Duho has exceeded my wildest expectations with a sole funding source. I am asking for your help in taking Duho Books to the next level. Your sponsorship will help Duho achieve our mission of sharing Bahamian history and culture with the world through the written word. I know that we are all differently able to contribute, which is why we have different levels of contribution, outlined here. At each level of sponsorship, Duho returns the favor, sharing the works of our authors with you. Sharing the Fall Collection works happens immediately; sharing books from the Spring Collection happens as soon as they are published.

Be the Change...
That blogger really cracked my face when he asked me why Bahamians didn’t have a more prominent literary tradition. Instead of cursing the dark, I decided to light a candle—Duho Books. You know, the name Duho is a nod to the Bahamas’ pre-European past, when chiefs (called caciques) were elevated on wooden ceremonial seats, or duhos.  Help Duho Books elevate the Bahamian experience to a higher level of awareness through the promotion of Bahamian authors and their stories—the stories of us!
