In 2016, a long term dream was realized when the Shepherd family opened a small independent bookstore in Saxapahaw, NC. In 2017, circumstances forced us to relocate to historic downtown Mebane, NC. We're not really "business" people, we just have a dream to get high quality used books of all kinds to people who want them.
With a background in education, libraries, art, design, writing and literature, we never wanted to be rich, we just wanted to have the best independent bookstore we could have, with new and used books that not only tell stories, but change lives.
In the year and a half that we've been open, we've been somewhat successful in this goal, but we didn't come into this with a tremendous amount of money and right now, we're struggling day to day just to keep the lights on and the basic bills paid. Even with three of us, it's been difficult to find side or part time work to supplement the store income due to a combination of physical disabilities and seizure disorder, and the ship is sinking fast.
So it's time to swallow our pride and reach out to the internet and to the community and to our customers to ask for help to keep the store open. Your donation will go towards paying off debt that we've accumulated in getting this store open and running, it will pay for getting new wonderful books in, for advertising, for more exciting author events and for hopefully giving us one more year at least to see if this crazy little experiment has legs or not.
