Therapy for Canillá, Guatemala

Please help to bring Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy to the people of Canillá, Guatemala!


- Short Summary 

We are Maren and Markus, both physiotherapists from Germany. We are currently working as volunteers for the project Las Maripositas in Canillá, Guatemala.

Our goal to help equip a new therapy room for physical and occupational therapy.

Currently, in Canillá therapy is offered, organized by the project Las Maripositas under the non profit organization ALAS - La Libertad. The team of Las Maripositas consists of 8 Guatemalans. Among them is Jose, a sports teacher, who performs the physiotherapy and Helen, a special education teacher who takes care of occupational and speech therapy.

We currently assist Jose in physiotherapy and have tried to teach him as much of our knowledge and skills as we can. One of the goals of Las Maripositas is to empower local Guatemalans to be able to be leaders and carers in their own communities. 


- What is the problem?

During our work here we have found that their is a high demand for therapy and the current facilities are not adequate. At present, the centre has 31 patients each week for physiotherapy and 25 patients for occupational and speech therapy. The patients are mainly children with developmental deficits or neurological diseases from extremely poor families from the town of Canilla or from the 46 villages that surround the town. In addition there are also adults with orthopedic problems who use the service. Currently there are still many patients on the waiting list, for whom there is either no room or no possibility to come to Canillá for therapy. A 4x4 ambulance is used to pick up a small part of patients from villages in the surrounding mountains for therapy. Those who are still mobile enough sometimes walk for hours to get to the therapy. The conditions under which people live in the so-called 'terrero', which means 'earthy', are hard to imagine. Many of these families do not have running water and electricity. Many families are also fatherless as most of the men are far away in the US  working to send home a little bit of money to help their families. We ourselves have been in the villages  a few times to pick up or drop of patients - you can be sure they need your help!




To make therapy possible for more of these people we are dreaming of equipping another therapy room. Many of the patients come from around San Andres, a village about 40 minutes away by car. There is a room that could be rented once a week. The therapy equipment should be mobile and portable because this room is only available 1 day a week. The mobile equipment also gives the opportunity to rent a room in other places or even offer therapy to patients at their home with the same mobile tools.

And that's exactly why we need your financial support! With € 5,000 we could improve the already existent therapy room and equip a new therapy room for physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.




And now a little bit about the project Las Maripositas in general!


The mission

They are equipping young men and women to perfect their innate abilities, empowering each individual to strengthen development and justice within their own community. We encompass a solid foundation of sustainability in transformative development, in which those in need and deprived of their rights have the lasting physical and spiritual resources inevitably required to serve strongly and to be a part of a new generation of just and emancipated leaders in their communities and the nation of Guatemala itself.

The project Las Maripositas takes care of the poorest of the poor in this barren, dry area of Guatemala. It was founded 4 years ago by the existing organization ALAS - La Libertad to help precisely these people without financial means. The organization is the work of a South African couple,  Greg and his wife Helaine, who began to give hope to the Guatemalans expelled from civil war 20 years ago. They brought education and job opportunities to the people. They always lived side by side with the locals. Today still they live with their 3 daughters in Canillá.

In the meantime, the organization has progressed so far that, in addition to education, medical help is also available to a fraction of the population. Doctor visits and some necessary surgery can be funded, including e.g. Ophthalmology OPs, OPs for heart complaints but also orthopedic complaints such as new hip joints or back operations. The costs are partly borne by aid organizations or by private donors.

However, it is not enough for the operation alone, as we all know. For example, Doña Emilia, 74 years old, has suffered from severe muscle atrophy, pain and muscular imbalance for one year following hip replacement surgery. Specific therapy for muscle strengthening after surgery is as important as the surgery itself. For such therapies, however, there are still no financial resources, neither from the state nor from organizations. The base Las Maripositas in Canillá is the first place of the project where physiotherapy and occupational therapy is currently possible. It is self-financed by other sub-projects of the ALAS organization, such as the sale of proprietary products such as Diego's own woodcarving or Afripica, a home-made salsa sauce.


Las Maripositas strives to multiply to allow more patients therapy and self-help. More clinics like these are to be built in surrounding villages.

The autonomy of the Guatemalans and the sustainability of the various projects are at the forefront of the organization. Nevertheless, they are currently still dependent on financial support.

Helft uns den Menschen von Canillá, Guatemala, Physiotherapie und Ergotherapie zu ermöglichen.


- Kurze Zusammenfassung 

Wir sind Maren und Markus, beide Physiotherapeuten aus Deutschland. Gerade arbeiten wir als Freiwillige für das Projekt Las Maripositas in Canillá, Guatemala. 

Unser Ziel ist es einen Therapieraum für Physiotherapie und Ergotherapie auszustatten. 

Hier in Canillá besteht bereits ein Raum für Therapie, organisiert durch das Projekt Las Maripositas der non profit organization ALAS - La Libertad. Das Team des Las Maripositas besteht aus 8 Guatemalteken. Darunter ist ein Sportlehrer Jose, der die Physiotherapie ausführt und die Pädagogin Helen, macht Ergo- und Logopädie. 

Wir unterstützen zur Zeit Jose in der Physiotherapie und probieren ihm so viel von unserem Wissen und Fähigkeiten beizubringen, wie wir können. Denn darum geht es bei Las Maripositas - die Selbstständigkeit der Guatemalteken zu fördern.


- Was ist das Problem?

Während unserer Arbeit hier haben wir aber festgestellt das es eine grosse Nachfrage an Therapie gibt, die bestehenden Materialien und Möglichkeiten aber nicht ausreichen. Mittlerweile kommen 31 Patienten zur Physiotherapie und 25 Patienten zur Ergo-, und Logopädie. Die Patienten sind hauptsächlich Kinder mit Entwicklungsdefiziten oder neurologischen Erkrankungen die unter extrem armen Verhältnissen in Canillá oder in einem der umliegenden 46 Dörfern leben. Aber auch Erwachsene mit orthopädischen Problemen sind auf die Hilfe von Las Maripositas angewiesen. Es stehen noch unzählige Patienten bereits auf der Warteliste, für die es entweder keinen Platz gibt oder keine Möglichkeit zur Therapie nach Canillá zu kommen. Durch einen 4x4 Ambulanzwagen können schon einige Patienten aus Kommunen im umliegenden Gebirge zur Therapie abgeholt werden. Diejenigen, die noch mobil sind laufen teilweise Stunden zu Fuss zur Therapie. Die Konditionen, unter denen die Menschen im sogenannten ‚Terrero‘, was so viel wie ‚erdig‘ bedeutet, leben, kann man sich schwer vorstellen. Diese Menschen haben selten fliessend Wasser und Elektrizität.  Männer gibt es dort nur wenige, denn diese sind weit weg in den USA um ein wenig Geld nach Hause zu schicken. Wir selber waren bereits ein Paar Mal dort um Patienten abzuholen - ihr könnt sicher sein - sie brauchen Hilfe!




Um Therapie für mehr dieser Menschen möglich zu machen würden wir gerne einen weiteren Therapieraum ausstatten. Viele der Patienten kommen aus der Umgebung von San Andres, ein Dorf was ca. 40 Minuten mit dem Auto entfernt liegt. Es gibt dort einen Raum der 1x wöchentlich gemietet werden könnte. Die Therapieutensilien müssten mobil und tragbar sein da dieser Raum nur 1 Tag in der Woche frei ist. Dies gibt aber auch die Chance an anderen Orten einen Raum zu mieten oder sogar bei Patienten daheim Therapie anzubieten mit den gleichen mobilen Utensilien.

Und genau hierfür bräuchten wir eure finanzielle Unterstützung! Mit 5000 € könnten wir einerseits den bisherigen Therapieraum verbessern und einen neuen Therapieraum für Physiotherapie und Ergotherapie ausstatten.

Ihre Mission:

Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe - Die Bildung und Förderung der Fähigkeiten der Einheimischen ist die Basis um nachhaltig die Selbstständigkeit der Guatemalteken zu fördern. 

Das Projekt Las Maripositas kümmert sich um die Ärmsten der Armen in dieser kargen, trockenen Gegend Guatemalas. Es wurde vor 4 Jahren von der bestehenden Organisation ALAS - La Libertad ins Leben gerufen um eben genau diesen Menschen ohne finanzielle Mittel zu helfen. Die Organization ist die Arbeit des Südafrikaners Greg und seiner Frau Helaine, die damals vor 20 Jahren begannen den vom Bürgerkrieg vertriebenen Guatemalteken wieder Hoffnung zu geben. Sie brachten Bildung und Arbeitsmöglichkeiten zu den Menschen. Sie lebten stets Seite an Seite mit den Einheimischen. Auch heute noch wohnen sie mit ihren mittlerweile 3 Töchtern in Canillá.

Mittlerweile ist ist die Organisation soweit fortgeschritten, dass neben Bildung auch medizinische Hilfe für einen Bruchteil der Bevölkerung möglich ist. Arztbesuche und einige nötige Operationen können finanziert werden, darunter z.B. Augen OP’s, OP’s für Herzbeschwerden aber auch orthopädische Beschwerden wie zum Beispiel neue Hüftgelenke oder Rückenoperationen. Die Kosten werden zu einem Teil von Hilfsorganisationen oder von Privatspendern übernommen. 

Alleine mit der Operation ist es aber nicht getan, wie wir alle wissen. So leidet Doña Emilia, 74 Jahre alt, nach einer Hüftoperation seit einem Jahr unter starkem Muskelschwund, Schmerzen und muskulärem Ungleichgewicht. Spezifische Therapie für den Muskelaufbau nach der Operation ist mindestens genauso wichtig wie die Operation selber. Für solch Therapien gibt es aber bisher noch keine finanziellen Mittel, weder vom Staat noch von Organisationen. Die Basis Las Maripositas in Canillá ist der erste Ort des Projektes wo zur Zeit bedingt Physiotherapie und Ergotherapie möglich ist. Es ist Selbstfinanziert durch andere Unterprojekte der ALAS Organisation, wie der Verkauf von eigenen Produkten wie z.B. Diego’s selbst geschreinertem Holzbesteck oder Afripica, einer selbst produzierten Salsa Sosse.



Las Maripositas strebt danach sich zu vervielfachen, um mehr Patienten Therapie und Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe zu ermöglichen. Mehr Kliniken wie diese sollen in umliegenden Dörfern entstehen.

Die Selbstständigkeit der Guatemalteken und die Nachhaltigkeit der verschiedenen Projekte steht im Vordergrund der Organisation. Nichts desto trotz sind sie zur Zeit noch auf finanzielle Unterstützung angewiesen.
