My Name is Coralie Allen and I’ve owned a hair salon for over 15 years and been hairdressing for over 28 years. I love to help people and make a difference in their lives. I created The Kindest Cut to Offer FREE Haircuts, internet services, help the Homeless with jobs or accommodation to get them off the streets or food. The Story
What started off as me wanting to give something back the way I know how, I started provided haircuts for the homeless and the less fortunate at Kings Cross, Sydney. Now with a team of like minded people we come together every month to provide basic necessities, toiletries, going on almost two years now. We also love to fellowship and offer prayer.
These acts of love we do maybe the only compassion they experience or the only way to make them feel human again. While being homeless, these people are looked down upon by society and do their best to be invisible as they are seen to the world.
I feel even though I've never been homeless I know what it feels like to not be loved from my experience growing up and would have appreciated for someone to do the same for me. It brings me so much happiness that I can put a smile on their face, be a listening ear or help with accommodation, jobs and much needed resources.
In regards to running my business Motorhead Hair Dzyne, I'm so grateful I am now in the position where my costs/overheads are a lot lower than what they were previously, so there is not so much financial stress for me to make money just to keep my business afloat.
This led me to be able to make my first mission trip to the beautiful island of Samoa.
I went there for a week, and did mission work for four of the seven days I was there.
All I knew was I needed to take my tools and give all the children some love through a haircut and a great way to meet the locals and hear their stories also to learn about their culture. I went to Moataa Village and cut the children's and mums hair that were living there. There were about seven families in the village. I took toiletries, food and gave them $200 of my own money. It was such a great two days i spent with these families.
They were so thankful that one of the young mums Rubinah who gave birth to her first child on the 13th March named her baby after me. She said I was like an angel to them because I helped them so much. That really made me feel like wow it was just a small act of kindness but to them it was massive.
Having a haircut there is definitely a luxury for these people. Most people on the island live off their land and plantation to feed their families. If they are lucky to get a job at a resort that’s amazing but they only get $2.00 per hour. This money would buy them rice and food they can't grow also their basic necessities.
Before my visit I was told about an organisation called SVSG that stands for Samoa Victim Support group.
SVSG contribute to making a difference in the lives of the children victims of sexual crimes sheltered at the House of Hope and educated at the School of Hope, abused and malnutrition babies at the Nursery Home, abandoned disability children at the Disability Home, women survivors of violence in the villages, the elderly and the disheartened in the Samoan community.
There is no other shelter available to victims at present, government or non-government, in Samoa besides the shelter provided by SVSG, a situation which SVSG considers unacceptable in light of the prevalence of the problem of domestic violence and child sexual abuse.
I spent the day with these children and my heart was heavy hearing the stories about what some of the victims had endured. There was an 11yr old girl who had been sexually abused by a family member then got pregnant, I can't imagine the pain of being sexually abused repeatedly by a grown man resulting in a child pregnancy then to be banished from her family and life that she's been bought up with because of the baby. Subsequently the young girl didn't want to be connected with her baby because it reminded her of all the pain and suffering she went through.
Because these children have spoken out about what happened they were unwanted from their families and told it was their own fault.
I know how that felt when I spoke out about me being sexually abused. It's horrible and you feel responsible for tearing your family apart and bringing shame to your family.
I took 30kgs of toiletries then purchased a trolley of food and snacks to take to SVSG shelter for the children which they really appreciated and showed their thanks by singing and dancing for us.
Goals
To be able to travel to Samoa and visit underprivileged areas where I believe we can make a difference and to impact communities with much needed necessities, emergency relief, food and basic living items.
To provide a beacon of hope for the children at SVSG, as well as gifting the organisation with much needed aid. To help women, men and families in times of hardship and assist in their everyday living
Upon identifying the needs of families in hardship I will be visiting Moataa Village with a large Tarpaulin which will be used as a temporary shelter for them in light of damage caused by the recent Cyclone Gita, also providing the families with food, toiletries and serving in the community providing haircuts
• Visit the Victims support group SVSG provide much needed necessities and help with daily meals, assist in teaching the Children at the School of Hope basic English, writing and spelling, playing games through craft, music and art, listening to their stories, providing haircuts and however else I can be of assistance to the organisation.
• Visit The Goshen Trust Samoa Mental Health Services and gift much needed food, provide haircuts, and be of assistance however I can and spend a couple days with the children, men and women that reside here who have been physically, sexually abused and suffering mental illness.
• Implant a need for the future of these children in the hearts of my community and instill a solid education for projects to support a bigger cause within these families and the children of SVSG, I would like to in the future build something on a larger scale that can help them ongoing help themselves with our help.
