Twelve year-old Devon Brown aka "The Kata Kid" has a rare opportunity of a lifetime: he has been selected to be a part of Team USA and compete at the Jr World Championships in Melbourne Australia in May 2013.
In 2007 at the age of 7, Devon began training in Karate. Within 6 months, he competed in his first local competition where he placed 1st in his division. Five years later, he continues his hard work and dedication. Though he lives in Pasco, he trains year-round under the guidance of Sensei David Lybbert of Walla Walla, with fierce loyalty and determination. Karate has had a positive impact in Devon's life & the hard-work required has helped contribute to success in other areas of his life as well. In addition to Karate, Devon is also a straight "˜A' student & plays two musical instruments. He enjoys sports, school, & has a passion for music. Since 2007, he has continually placed in the top 3 in his divisions at local, district, regional, & out-of-state tournaments. This past summer, he brought home medals in multiple divisions at the National Championships in Chicago and Jr. Olympics in Houston. Most recently, he earned two gold medals at a tournament in Seattle.
In December 2012, Devon received the following letter
"As a result of your performance at the 2012 AAU/USA National Championship in Chicago & the Jr Olympic Team Trials in Houston, the coaching staff has chosen YOU to be a part of the 2012 World Karate Confederation's 9th World Championship Team. This elite team is scheduled to compete during May in Melbourne Australia.
We congratulate you on being to chosen to what we believe is one of the best World Championship Teams ever compiled. You are now a part of Team USA, this country's most elite team of Karate-Ka. We look forward to traveling with you to Australia on your quest for the Gold."
Devon is one of only 6 competitors from the Pacific Northwest invited to participate on Team USA. He is the youngest of those PNW athletes and the only athlete from the Tri-Cities to be invited to be part of this team. Respect, Dedication, Determination, and Discipline are some of the core values he and his fellow Karate competitors must possess. That's not to say they don't have fun though! Devon truly loves this amazing sport and the people he meets while participating! From Canada to Mexico, U.S. to Japan, he and his competitors share a mutual respect and passion for the sport of Karate.
The cost of this amazing opportunity does not come cheap. Devon must raise over $9000 for this life-shaping opportunity. This cost includes airfare and transportation, lodging, meals, tournament costs, and training fees. We are currently seeking private and corporate sponsorships to help offset the cost of this life-shaping opportunity. Simply put, a donation of $10 from 1000 people would make this dream a reality. As parents, we are willing to exhaust all of our resources to make this dream come true, whether it be refinancing, loans, credit, etc. Every little bit of community support helps & your gift will be truly appreciated!
Devon's goal one day is to stand on the podium at the Olympics representing the United States of America. This is a big step in achieving that goal.
