The Homeless Period Southampton is a volunteer-led campaign. It works to collect donations of sanitary towels, tampons, new underwear and hygiene wipes and creates care packages that will be donated to local homeless shelters, women's refuges, food banks and charitable organisations for women and girls in need across Southampton and the surrounding areas.
Periods are not a great time of the month for anyone, but for many homeless and vulnerable people with very limited access to the expensive 'luxury' of sanitary items, it is a truly awful and humiliating time, and because of the taboo that surrounds the topic, it's something that doesn't often cross our mind.
Some are forced to use ripped up cloths, old socks or toilet roll from public toilets, or make a few tampons last the entire length of their period. This can lead to infections, putting people's physical health at serious risk, as well as damaging their emotional wellbeing.
How to get involved:
- Donate. Donate any amount you can to our GoFundMe campaign to ensure we can purchase even more resources for women and girls in need.
- Be a drop-off point. Can your organisation offer to collect donated items from our supporters, and allow The Homeless Period Southampton volunteers to collect them?
- Volunteer. Can you offer your time and energy to help collect donations, create care packages, and deliver them to local organisations in need?
- Share your skills. This project is run remotely while I'm off working full-time in London (booo!). We're always looking to expand our on-the-ground team.
- Spread the word. Like and share us on Facebook , follow us on Twitter and Instagram , and recruit your friends!
