This spring Nested will be launching our first official medical mission in Ecuador, endearingly called Project Nido- Project Nest . We will be partnering with the Ecuadorian organization FIBUSPAM, which has a central clinic located in the Chimborazo region of Ecuador, but also reaches needs throughout the country with mobile clinics.
Our overall goal will be to bring the highest quality of medical care to the people and communities with consistent need and limited access to care providers. We especially want to help the 63% of the indigenous population in this region that lives in extreme poverty.
We will specifically focus on women's health and aim to provide cervical cancer screening, family planning services, and specifically focus on women's health and hygiene counseling. The scope of Project Nido is UTI prevention, hygiene issues and menstrual irregularities. The target audience is women and hope to treat a total of 700 patients over a five day period.
In Ecuador, women's health issues are often taboo. Many women give birth at home, and don't have regular access to gynecological care, including family planning services. By focusing on women's health we will not only empower women to take control of their personal well-being but also serve as a catalyst for Ecuadorian families to live healthier more productive lives.
Additionally, we aim to build capacity within local staff to scale up their current VIA cervical cancer program and help them better address the specific needs of women's healthcare locally. We also aim create an environment where patients are enabled to advocate for themselves both within the healthcare and family settings.
This trip will take place from April 28th - May 6th 2018 and funding is needed for practitioner participation, materials and supplies, pharmaceuticals and related costs.
