Justification:

The impetus behind this community event has been based on an observation of the existing climate of racial relations in America - on a societal level as well as within and between urban communities of color. As we look at the injustice and inequality in this country as it pertains in particular to Black and Brown communities in relation to society as a whole, it is evident there are fundamental issues with the Economic, Political and Social systems in place. To begin to address, critique and ultimately change these systems, we must begin with understanding them.

Thus with this proposal we seek to create an educative opportunity for the entire community, a space established to explain and engage with the issues of how the system engages with the  community, how history has affected that engagement, and how we all can create and support pathways for a real change in America.

Action:

Without the opportunity to be educated, we’re withheld the ability to be empowered. Thus sprung the idea of an opportunity for a Community Teach-In featuring the following courses/activities:

Keynote Speaker: (Prominent Women of Color TBD) - This individual will be able to welcome the attendees and set the foundation and tone for the event.

Building a Community Economy:  This course will address the economic position Black and Brown communities and provide a blueprint for how to establish an economic foundation for these communities here in Providence, Rhode Island.

Establishing a Community-Responsive Political System: This course will address the legislative and political steps to establishing all members and groups within the community as essential constituencies in Providence, and explain how the community can hold this political system accountable to it.

The Roots of Community Organizing: This course will address the history of Community activism, centered on Black political activity and community organizing in the past as it pertains to its effect on present conditions as well as the foundation it’s laid for underrepresented communities.

Community Resource fair - Non- and for-profit entities that represent the Community will be present and made aware to attendees in order to take steps towards building bridges for the opportunity for the establishment of more supportive organizations and increased awareness around those that already exist.

Methodology:

Outreach will be a community effort with a strong emphasis on the engagement and involvement of civically engaged high school age youth. These youth will be empowered and entrusted to engage the community and bring information on the Teach-in to community centers in Providence’s most impacted communities, as well as take to the streets of Providence to ensure the word is spread throughout the community. Established organizations working with the community will also be engaged and asked to support the efforts and spread the message to members of the community.

Coordinators and volunteers will aid and support the flow of the event and ensure people are being guided, supported and assisted as necessary. With the expected number of 500 community members we expect to have 20 day-of volunteers and coordinators.

15 college students will support the break out sessions following each course lecture as facilitators to create opportunities for open dialogue and discussion based off the content presented.

Following the teach-in, the content documented will be compiled and produced in the form of a Report, photos, and a mini-documentary that captures the efforts and outcome of this event.
