Hi Everyone!

Firstly, I’d like to just thank you in advance for taking the time to read about something that is very near and dear to my heart.

On July 10th I walked into a residential treatment center for an eating disorder that I had been battling for years. This place saved my life. Unfortunately a huge, unnecessary, battle during my stay there had been with insurance. I never understood what the fuss was all about when it came to Health insurance until I found myself writing a letter begging them to keep covering me. See, this is how insurance works (in my case). If they agree to cover you, they often check up every 5-7 days to see just how stable you are. If they feel you are medically stable, often solely based on weight restoration, they push back when asked to give more time. Each week my treatment team not only had to fight my eating disorder but also fight my insurance. Like I said this adds unnecessary stress and takes time away from the healing process and further lengthens the time needed to recover. I understand that it is unrealistic to “recover” in residential treatment, but what isn’t unrealistic is being able to hit that mythical creature we like to call maintain. This is where the Unicorn comes into play. See maintain is that state of being where you can stay within a weight range and still eat. I know this may seem a little ridiculous to people without an eating disorder which is why I’m here to give you a bit of insight. In my case, maintain was a unicorn. To me food meant one thing. You either ate it and gained weight or you restricted your food and lost weight. I didn’t believe there was such a thing as eating food everyday and maintaining a weight. During my stay in residential I was lucky enough to hit maintain and given time to prove that maintain is possible. That it isn’t a unicorn. So why am I telling you all of this? Well for me, like I said, I was lucky to hit maintain before insurance cut me. But most people aren’t as lucky. Insurance doesn’t realize that hitting maintain is one of the most crucial, monumental moments in the recovery process of an eating disorder. Unfortunately people get cut from residential prematurely and what insurance doesn’t realize is the power that holds in the recovery process.

So how does this all lead me to a gofundme page? Well I have given up on hoping insurance will understand. After writing them a letter begging for more time and pleading to not put a nail in my coffin, they still didn’t listen. I still got cut and ending up having to pay out of pocket for the remainder of my stay. Some people out there are not as fortunate. I am here to raise money towards my organization called The Unicorn Affect. This fund will solely go to people who are cut from insurance before getting to hit maintain. I believe maintain is a crucial part of recovery and hitting it in residential is, in my opinion, the best form of relapse prevention.

Residential treatment for eating disorders can be as much as $2000 a day out of pocket. Any amount is greatly appreciated and if you can’t donate all I ask is you share this page and help me create this organization to help raise money and awareness towards this very important cause.

Treatment saved my life and I know we can help save the lives of so many more people struggling with this insidious disease.

Thank you again ❤️
