My name is Thomas Smith, I have set up a Facebook group to raise awanress of mental health issues, the group has revived over 1100 members in a week. I suffer from schizophrenia and I am currently in hospital following the fourth attempt to take my own life in the past 12 months and fourth hospitalisation in 2 years
The reason for my all my attempts on my life have been due to the fact I sadly lost my Boyfriend, to an accidental overdose, A close friend to a suicide and another very close friend in a car crash, that mixed with the voices and hallucinations I constantly hear and occasionally see it tipped me over the edge.
The first few days I started blogging my experiences and what was going on in my head, the purpose of which at the time was to keeping my mind thoughts from wanting to harm myself. I can’t believe the overwhelming response and support that I received, I was getting messages from people suffering from mental illness thanking me for giving them the courage to speak out and get help. It’s taken 4 attempts to break the walls around me – but I’ve learnt mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and its OK not feeling well. I was embarrassed and feared I would disappoint all who knew me if they found out about my illness, but now I’ve learnt to embrace it and use my lowest point for something good. I created a group ‘me, myself and I. Tom inside a beautifully ugly mind’ – I hope the group takes off the support I’ve received already has been phenomenal, the purpose of the group is to raise awareness, educated those who are lucky enough not to be effected by mental illness and to give a voice to the many suffering in silence. I decided to write a journal of the events in my life I’m willing to share in the hope it will help more people who are suffering but afraid to speak out.
