The Salluit Amaruq Hockey Club

The Salluit Amaruq Hockey Club is located in Salluit, Nunavik - an Inuit community in the Arctic of Quebec. Jeremy and Breanna created the Salluit Amaruq Hockey Club in 2015. Prior to this program, there was no organized hockey club in the small, isolated community. Since 2015, we have established an ongoing hockey program that positively impacts the Inuit youth of Salluit.

The team promotes the importance of being a student-athlete. Players are required to maintain good attendance and positive behaviour in the school. We use hockey to foster skills such as teamwork, leadership, punctuality, and respect to encourage our members to become influential members of their community.
The hockey program has resulted in significant improvements in attendance, behaviour, and leadership of our student-athletes both in school and in the community. Parents and teachers have personally told us of the positive impact they have witnessed because of the hockey program.

In 2016, we were able to take a team from Salluit to Montreal to play in a tournament. For many of them this was their first experience playing organized hockey. It was a great success! With the funds raised from last years golf tournament, we were able to take another group of deserving student-athletes to Toronto in 2017. Throughout the visit in Toronto there were many opportunities for a true and rich sharing of cultures and creation of friendship between our players and the players of other teams. The team was estatic to learn about a new province, meet new people, and put their practice to action!

Due to the high costs associated with traveling from the Arctic, we are hoping to raise funds to allow these incredibly hard-working and deserving student-athletes to have the opportunity to travel and play once again in "the South" (as they call it) this upcoming season!
