It's high noon in Victoria, B.C.

The clock tower above city hall still rings faithfully every hour.  But what about the people inside the building--do they deserve our trust and faith? Or is there a democracy deficit in our town?

The election is just weeks away on October 20, but the incumbent council faces little public scrutiny from new candidates, the citizenry, or even the media, thanks to the collapse of professional journalism and general distraction and apathy.

Enter The Record,  a website that debuts this month with the goal of disclosing the voting record of Mayor Helps and the eight incumbent councillors on key issues. Edited by journalist Sid Tafler, The Record will also cover the election, offer analysis and explain what happened once it's all over (that's as far as we're planning--a short, but focussed burst of civic coverage).

Love or loathe the current council, we hope you agree that democracy depends upon full disclosure and public input. That's where YOU come in. We desperately want your ideas, thoughts, feedback, and yes, financial support.

We've set a modest goal of $3,000 to build and operate the website, pay writers and photographers, and install listening devices at City Hall (don't worry, our devices are people). Not a bad deal for helping safeguard the future of democracy in our city!

Donate by credit or debit card, privately or in public, your choice. Even the smallest contribution will make a difference.
