The Mackinnon Fund

Hello Friends! We have started a GoFundMe account to help support the MacKinnon family as they navigate their way through Kevin’s cancer, his treatment and his latest medical event.

For those of you who don’t  know this family: Kevin, 41 is a super dad to 3 amazing littles: Illyaana, 12, Nyla, 8 and Xavier, 6. He’s a master at wrangling kiddos, rough playing, snuggling, hugs, reading stories and supporting his family. He’s also a pretty amazing husband to his wife Nadia, 41 and has achieved “expert status” in doing laundry for the family. He’s also the only person I know that can do a standing tuck in flip flops.

In September, 2017 Kevin lost his Manager job with the city. As a normal response, the family knew he would be back to work quickly and relied on Nadia’s salary  as a temporary measure until Kevin was able to find something. They kept things as normal as possible for the kids: after school, childcare, camps, sports etc.

In May 2018, Kevin was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer called
Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Myelidysplastic syndrome are a group of cancers in which immature blood cells in the bone marrow do not mature and therefore do not become healthy blood cells. Without treatment, this disease is fatal.

In order to survive, Kevin desperately needs a bone marrow transplant and in early July, Dr’s at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto found a match! Both Nadia and Kevin knew the risks and benefits of the procedure and were making arrangements for themselves and the kids. T-Shirts were made, bags were being packed and the MacKinnon Clan was ready to rally!

As of Thursday July 12th, steps were being taken with the transplant team to start the bone marrow transplant. In the meantime, he has been travelling to and from the Newmarket hospital to receive  platelets (which basically stop Kevin for spontaneous bleeds as his blood is at risk for not clotting with this disease).

On Friday July 13th, just 1 day after the transplant meeting, Kevin woke up with a terrible headache and was hospitalized and diagnosed with a brain bleed. He was quickly transported to St. Michaels hospital and is fighting for his life with his wife Nadia by his side. He underwent a dangerous procedure to drain the fluid from his brain. He’s in the ICU in a medically induced Coma and we are waiting.

Waiting for him to be strong enough to withstand the life saving bone marrow transplant which has been delayed indefinitely.

Our goal of the GO FUND ME is to help offset costs of gas, parking, travel, childcare for the kids, food and help with the family bills and day to day expenses.

Thank you everyone for your continued support! We couldn’t do this without you.❤️Kevin’s fan club: Xavier, 6, Illyaana, 12, Nyla, 8
