THE LOTEN’S SUNBIRD SCHOLARSHIP
We would never had met Prishilla on our India trip except for the strange juxtaposition of beauty and ugliness that brought us to her doorstep. We had spotted a Loten’s Sunbird...a stunningly beautiful bird similar to our hummingbirds...flitting about in a bush next to her porch. We ended up talking to her because we were riding bikes that day and everybody had to wait for me to catch up because I had stopped to take
....oh, I don’t know....around five hundred pictures of a giant fruit bat that had electrocuted himself on some power lines.
When I caught up with everyone Prishilla was already talking to the group from her porch. Ram had asked her about her plans after graduation and she said she would like to study to become a nurse but there was no money for that. Her father was dead and she lived alone with her grandparents. There was something about her sunny disposition...so at odds with her circumstances...that just struck me. Later when talking with Sudha I mentioned wishing there was something we could do to help her with school and Sudha was moved by the idea of helping Prischilla pursue her passion for a career in Nursing, and jumped into action. India is a wonderful place and I was so taken with the kindness and friendliness of its people but...just like our country....they continue to strive on their long journey to improve the lives of their women.
You know...birds have brought so much to my life. Beauty, friendship, indeed my very trip to India itself.... but what this Sunbird was offering might be their greatest gift of all. The opportunity to really make a difference in someone’s life. That Loten’s Sunbird had led us to Prishilla at a crucial crossroads in her life.....and had given us the opportunity to change it.
