My name is Leilani Worrell. I am a reading teacher at Simmons Pinckney Middle School (SPMS) and a track coach at Burke High School (BHS), both located in the heart of downtown Charleston. These schools are Title I schools, which means that the school has a significant amount of students who receive free/reduced lunch (an indicator of poverty). I have been teaching at SPMS for 2 years and have been a track coach at Burke for 3 years. I am also a homework teacher for the 21st Century After School Program at SPMS. Prior to my current position at SPMS, I was a 7th grade English teacher at BHS. As seen by the many hats I wear and have worn, one can see that I am invested in this community that I love so dearly. I am very passionate about educating and caring for students. I believe that it is important for students to have unique and rich experiences so that they can grow and blossom.
I have a genuine desire to expose some very special young ladies from these schools to the arts. I plan to do this by taking them to see The Lion King at the Peace Concert Hall in Greenville, SC! All of these young ladies are students that I have taught, mentored, and/or coached at SPMS and/or BHS. These young ladies all have tremendous potential, however they come from a community that lacks sufficient exposure/access to the arts and other rich and cultural experiences . Through this opportunity, it is my goal to spark an interest and love for the arts, travels, unique experiences, and most importantly, learning outside the confines of the traditional classroom.
The goal is to raise the money by June 3rd, 2017! The show runs from May 31st- June 25th. It is an ambitous goal, but I believe we can do it! I am looking to take about 15 young ladies. Tickets run about $75 each, and I am trying to secure a bus to transport the students to this event which is the reason for this goal.
I am huge on accountability and transparency, so I have put the link to the tickets below. Furthermore I will keep you all updated on the progress of the project and post updates and pics of our adventure! I'm really excited for this endeavor and I hope you can help me make this dream come to fruition!
Much love and be blessed! :) <3
