The Liberty Book Project

Some months ago, when my friend Laura Carno published her book Government Ruins Nearly Everything: Reclaiming Social Issues from Uncivil Servants, I thought it would be a good idea to provide a copy to each sitting legislator in the Colorado General Assembly. As the time commitments of working on the November election grew greater, the idea faded from the front of my mind and I put the project on hold.

Recently I posted a picture on Facebook of the title page of a book I purchased in my Leadership Program of the Rockies November class last year, entitled A Capitalist Manifesto, by Dr. Gary Wolfram. A state representative who is one of my Facebook friends messaged me to let me know he bought the book on Amazon after seeing my post.

This incident brought this idea back, especially given the razor-thin balance of power we currently have. Regardless of party or ideology, there are some books I believe it would be beneficial for every legislator to read (or re-read).

In that light, I put together a list of four books I would like to send to each member of the Seventy-first General Assembly, the governor and lieutenant governor, and each of the seven justices of the Colorado Supreme Court.

The four books are:

·         The Cato Pocket Constitution
·         Government Ruins Nearly Everything, by Laura                    Carno
·         The Law, by Frederic Bastiat
·         Economics in One Lesson, by Henry Hazlitt

Each of these books provides guidance on the rule of law, the proper role of government, economic theory and the founding documents of our nation. Whether they end up on the bookshelf or in the trash, they are a way of telling our state legislators, executive and judiciary what we want them to pay attention to, and reminding them that they are our agents, not our masters.

I would like to have a set of books, along with a nice personalized letter sitting on each legislator’s desk when the session starts.

I crunched the numbers, and I think this project can be accomplished at the cost of $1,600. I have set up a GoFundMe page for this project, and any excess funds will be donated to the Cato Institute. Alternatively, I may consider adding an additional book promoting liberty.

Please consider donating generously to this cause.

Thank you.

The Law by Bastiat is a must read not only for politicians, but for every citizen who cares about freedom derived from our Constitutional Republic and veterans who defend it.
