Jean O’Konski Zachmann (5 January 1911 – 25 September 1977) was a unique 20th Century woman who was well ahead of her times. Jean was a pioneer explorer of women’s roles in society long before the Feminist Revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
She was a daughter of Polish immigrants to the USA. Her father, Francisk O’Konski, served as an officer in the army of the Tzar of Russia during the Russo-Japanese war. He worked at the Collinwood Yards of the New York Central Railroad in Cleveland, Ohio after moving to the USA with his wife, Helen, in 1906.
Jean married, on 23 August 1941, her husband, Kurt Wilhelm Zachmann, a German immigrant who came from Wilferdingen, Baden, Germany to Shaker Heights, Ohio with his parents and his brother Hans in 1928 at the age of 11 in 1928. Excerpts from her journals, are currently being published on her 21st Century blog site, jeanoz.com for the first time.
But that is only the first step.
Jean's story will develop into a number of books, sponsored academic research on the life of American women in the 20th century, a documentary movie, and various art and entertainment projects.
