The Calm Comedy Hour

Hello!

My name is Jonathan Blake and once a month I host a show called "The Calm Comedy Hour". I begin each show by breathing with the audience and saying, "You are enough."

On Saturday, I taught my first Calm Comedy Workshop and it was everything I had hoped it would be and more. Afterwards, my friend messaged me and said, "I had one of those days where I doubted myself and felt very negative feelings and then I remembered the workshop on Saturday and reminded myself I was enough." I felt so honored that she messaged me and thankful she was able to remember that she is enough.

Organizing and leading these workshops, I feel like my MS in Counseling, my 12 years performing stand up, and my one year as a Buddhist Minister’s Assistant are all coming together into something I can offer the world.

The original intention of this GoFundMe Campaign was to fund a documentary about my Calm Comedy Hour show but I’ve now decided that I’m going to focus more on the Workshops and allow the documentary to grow out of that. I’m going to organize and lead groups/workshops for people who experience anxiety and depression around performing and social interaction and we’ll work on addressing those experiences through stand up! And I’m going to offer that whoever would like to host the workshop will receive the workshop for free. I’m going to buy a cordless microphone and stand so that I can lead the workshop in a living room, back yard, community center, etc.

There are people who are very talented at teaching the technical aspects of stand up. I would like to focus more on what goes on in the space and silence before and after you tell the joke. So much can occur in those moments and it’s those thoughts and experiences I would like to address.

I believe where there is great fear, there is also great power and stand up comedy is an incredible opportunity to work with our fears and experience healing for both and ourselves and our audiences.

Your donation will go toward the following:
Cordless Microphone
Microphone Stand
Hosting fees for my website to share about the workshops
The Documentary that will focus on the workshops and my personal comedic journey this year
My general living expenses which will allow me the time and freedom to travel and offer these workshops
Offset the cost of the groups and workshops so that I can offer scholarships and reduced rates depending on the needs and ability of the participants

I am also applying for grants and other funding opportunities!

I am currently writing a Calm Comedy Hour Workbook which will be available to all who donate. Also, everyone who donates will receive discounts on future workshops and recognition in the documentary and the workbook! Your help and support means so much and the support I've received already has meant the world and has allowed me the opportunity to have my first workshop, something for which I am eternally grateful.

Thank you for reading.

These last few days I’ve been seeing myself as a boulder that knew if they could only get to the top of that hill, that they could roll and it would be the best thing ever. But the boulder had always felt too heavy and too much of a burden to ask for help up the hill but then they started noticing more and more hands coming up behind them and they started moving up the hill and starting to see what’s on the other side.

“I’m too much of a burden” the boulder said looking back. “You’re not a burden at all and besides, it’s our joy to watch you roll.” The townspeople answered in unison. In these last few days I have been met with so much encouragement and support and the help I’m receiving is helping me live a life I hadn’t thought possible. I am so grateful. Thank you.

Hello everyone! Thank you all so much for your support and encouragement!! I was talking with a friend last night and shared with her the comments and donations and she was so happy for me. She told me, “You should ask for $5,000.”

I began seeing a therapist regularly late last year and his exhortation to me was to recognize my value, advocate for my worth in a bold way, in a way I’ve never been comfortable with before. This is one of those ways. I believe in myself and seeing other people believe in me too helps me believe even more. I’m shaking a bit as I write this update because I know that this project can take me far beyond where I’m comfortable and will challenge me in the best ways. Thank you for believing in me believing in myself. A friend texted me yesterday, “You’re using your life to heal yourself and bring love to the world.” That resonated with me so strongly and I can think of no better use for this life than to heal and bring love to the world. I’m honored to be a part of it. Thank you.
