NOT GIVING IN…

Ben is 33. A young, fit 33 year old, who likes to hit the gym, often twice a day, eats well, and enjoys a good time with friends and family. A caring family man, with a heart of gold, a strong career and an appetite for life.

This year however, things began to change. Slowly at first, with no obvious signs, nothing that you could pinpoint exactly. Working long hours, we're bound to feel tired, right? You begin to feel the stress and strain of everyday life, but it's okay not to be okay, right? At what point does it become more than just 'mental health' ? At what point does that stress and fatigue become chronic and begin to close down your world?...and at what point do doctors begin to investigate the underlying physical factors causing this problem??

The answer is …. sadly in Benj's case, all too late…Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, and if diagnosed early is highly treatable and curable but in August this year, Benj was diagnosed with stage four terminal Bowel Cancer.

Just like that at 33, his life, his world has completely changed in the blink of an eye. Now hospital appointments, medication, treatment plans and fear have barged their way in and cruelly taken the place of future hopes and dreams. How do you even begin to comprehend that? How do you stay positive and create a 'new normal' when everything is spiralling out of control? How do you begin to tell him just how much you love him and reassure him that everything will be okay?

Cancer Sucks. I mean it REALLY sucks!

We want to show Benj just how much he means to us by doing everything we possibly can to raise funds for his treatment, for Dorothy House and for his wife and step daughter's future. Our Bowel Movement campaign also aims to raise vital awareness of the key signs of bowel cancer. It's it still a taboo to talk about your poo, but a change in your bowel habits might be an early sign of something more sinister. The signs and symptoms are not always that obvious however, and like Benj, often get mistaken for things like fatigue, anaemia, mental health and IBS. This leads to delayed diagnosis and ultimately, costs lives.

We know that sadly there is no cure, but we want to be able to give Ben the best chance to receive the best possible treatments out there, and more importantly, allow him to have the BEST possible quality of life, for however long that may be. Ultimately, the treatment he receives shouldn’t be determined by whether there is a price tag attached to it. To us, his quality of life is priceless. But there are treatments which are not available on the NHS, ones which have been shown to prolong life and hold off this terrible disease for longer than conventional treatments alone.

We will be kick-starting this campaign with a charity run in Bath on 9th December https://www.dorothyhouse.org.uk/events/santa-and-elf-run-2018/… but we won't be stopping there. We will run, swim, cycle, hike, bake, organise events, gigs, charity balls, and quite literally go to the ends of the earth to raise funds and importantly awareness of this terrible disease. We will fight this with him every step of the way!

Stay tuned and we will post regular updates of all our efforts to fight his corner. A percentage of all proceeds will go to Dorothy House who have already provided such incredible support to Benj and his family.

Please help us smash our target by donating what you can, or join us in one of our events …. and let's all say a big F*UCK YOU to Cancer! X

We absolutely smashed our target in just 7 days....We couldn't have done it without you! Please read below to find out how this money will be used to help fund important treatment for Benj.

Avastin is a powerful drug which works by blocking the blood supply that feeds a tumour and in doing so, aims to prevent tumour growth. Avastin is no longer funded by the NHS but has shown to prolong the life by several months for someone with metastatic colon cancer. For example, Deborah James AKA the incredible @Bowelbabe had Avastin for a whole year alongside her chemotherapy treatment and although she said it was 'hardcore', she said importantly, it kept her alive. But Avastin is expensive, and we fully appreciate that the NHS is not a bottomless pit of money.
So for Benj to have this drug added alongside his chemotherapy it will cost £2100 every two weeks! In less than one week we are now able to fund the first 6 cycle course of chemo (3-months), with Avastin added in the cocktail. So we can't thank you enough for the money raised to date...but unfortunately 6 cycles won't be enough, he will need Avastin in the next 6 cycles, and then the next 6 cycles and so on. We hope that adding this intensive treatment will add precious months to his life, and that's our focus......having time. Time to be a husband, stepdad, son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, friend....and soon to be an uncle to his sister's first baby! Time to take a walk, time to have a drink with friends, time to go and watch a game of football or rugby, time to live a quality life.......Heck, there's nothing like a cancer diagnosis to highlight the most important things in life!
Therefore our campaign needs to grow so that once Avastin is added to his treatment we can continue to provide it for as long as he needs it. This fundraising campaign has blown us away with the amount it has raised and there are 'hubs' of fundraising happening- small Bowel Movements if you will :) amongst some incredible family, friends and even strangers offering to support our campaign... we will keep you posted on what's happening here, on Facebook, Instagram (@The_Bowel_Movement) and Twitter (@The_B_Movement)....so please follow along and, continue to support Benj with your time, energy, motivation, events, and generous donations.
Thank-you. Thank-you. Thank-you

On 19th the September the colorectal team of surgeons and nurses in Bath RUH performed life-saving surgery to remove a 5cm perforated tumour and a large part of Benj's bowel... through their amazing work and incredible support they extended his life to which we are eternally grateful

Today Benj starts a gruelling course of chemotherapy to try and holt these tumours in their tracks. This is no easy road, and certainly a journey that he did not choose to take, but he is made of some tough stuff and will dig deep, no doubt about it. We trust that he is in the best place to receive the best possible treatment and have faith that the dedicated oncology team of doctors and nurses will help him to have a better quality of life.

We have been absolutely blown away by all of your kind messages and support over the last few days, we can not thank you enough. It really means so much for Benj to know that he is not fighting this battle alone. Xx
