The Blackwood Project was created by Brandon Blackwood to counter one of New York City’s most vulnerable demographics… Homeless youth ages 13-25. We aim to stand in as the family /friends/support systems these youth need, by providing basic necessities, counseling, clothing, supplies, and job training. In a city that collects upwards of 50 BILLION Dollars, there is no excuse for these at-risk individuals to be without the proper living quarters, training, and daily necessities.

We are asking that you join in aiding our mission. All donations with be allotted to several NYC based homeless youth organizations plus go towards purchasing basic human needs. We are all in this together and ever penny matters.

-Purchase more beds and bedding for pre-existing youth shelters

-More accessibility to Counseling / Therapy within shelters

-Job training and placement courses and fairs

- Uniforms and/or Work clothing  for newly acquired jobs (blazers, pants, blouses, shoes, winter coats)

- Monetary support directly to youth-specific homeless shelters across all 5 boroughs. (This will aid in funding  maintenance of facilities, on-site staff, on-site therapist/counselors,  and making sure the lights stay on in these shelters)

- Creating theft-proof convertible backpacks/ work bags for youth traveling through different shelter systems.

- Supplying parenting homeless  youth with diapers, formula, and other materials for their children.

We are hoping to reach our goal of 250K by Mid-March. 75K will go towards above listed materials. The remanding money will  be split evenly and go to the below listed shelters to aid in maintaining facilities / providing programs for young adults.

STATISTICS

There are 63,636 homeless people, including 15,580 homeless families with 23,065 homeless children, sleeping each night in the New York City municipal shelter system.

These numbers are surreal when realizing New York State brought in  54.5 BILLION in tax revenue 2017.

Simply put, people are being forgotten. Even worse, youth from 13-25yrs of age.

Homeless young people of New York are overlooked and underserved. Though New York City holds its annual count of homeless people, as part of a nationwide tally coordinated by the federal government. The undertaking involves more than 3,000 volunteers who fan out across the five boroughs to record how many people are found to be living on the street. Many of those in their late teens and early 20s who are homeless and present particular challenges and risks. Many  are runaways, or former foster children who are now too old for state services, or been victims of abuse or homophobia at home.
Unfortunately, many youth are undetected in this tally. The reason being that in this system, they are forced to be adults.

Undercounting them means fewer social services for people at particular risk of being drawn into prostitution and cycling into long-term homelessness, according to organizations that specialize in helping young homeless people.
