The Barbershop Revival 2019

Help us fund a celebration of the true origins of the barbershop harmony singing we love!

Barbershop harmony is a true indigenous American music art form that, like jazz, blues, and gospel, grew out of the same African American music traditions. The link between barbershop harmony has only recently been widely acknowledged. Such jazz greats as Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, and Fats Waller all sang in barbershop quartets as young men on the street corners of New Orleans.

We want to re-establish the connection between barbershop harmony and the African American community by reaching out to young people so they can learn about an uncelebrated influence of their musical heritage.

In keeping with the Barbershop Harmony Society's diversity mission of radical outreach, The Carolinas District is taking a leadership role in this mission through The Barbershop Revival.

Our goal is to make Barbershop Revival 2009 the first in an annual collegiate singing outreach, but we need your help. We need to raise $5,000 by March 22 to finance the talented clinicians and guest artists. Please click HERE  to donate now. Every donation helps, no matter how small.

Help us make this dream a reality! The Revival will be held:

          NC Central University
          March 22-23, 2019
          The Price Music Center
          Durham, NC

Saturday night concert: March 23, B.N Duke Auditorium, NCCU campus

Barbershop Revival invites students from the 3 Triangle Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU'S), as well as other area universities in the Triangle area, for a weekend of experiencing barbershop a capella singing to learn about a part of their musical heritage they likely knew nothing about.

Participants will register on Friday, March 22, and receive the music they will learn. Friday evening and all day Saturday our clinicians will conduct master classes in singing close harmony.

On Saturday afternoon, a panel of music scholars, including  Dr. David Wright and Dr. Jim Henry, among others, will discuss the true origins of barbershop harmony in African American music traditions.

The Saturday night finale concert will take place at B.N. Duke Auditorium and feature gold medal quartet Crossroads, Sweet Adelines quartet HALO, SAI Rising Star champions GQ, and the student chorus. Special guest BHS CEO Marty Monson will be on hand to address the audience.

Our very special guests will be the Grammy-award winning gospel quartet The Fairfield Four, who are honorary lifetime BHS members, in recognition of the contribution of African American music to our art form.

Please feel free to join us for the Saturday evening show! Tickets are only $15.00, available at the door.
