The 10th Annual Global Gala

Donation protected
This Go Fund Me is for those that are wanting to contribute to the global gala on November 23rd but are unable to attend. All the funds raised here will be added to the funds raised from the gala.

For fourteen years, nursing students who are passionate about global health and building capacity in communities have had the opportunity to participate in a global health practicum in Ghana, and more recently, Zambia. For the fourth year, the UBCO nursing students are excited to be partnering with the Okanagan-Zambia Health Initiative (OkaZHI). OkaZHI is a local volunteer, non-governmental organisation comprised of an interdisciplinary healthcare team. Their primary mission is to work in partnership with Zambian, Canadian and international education institutions to improve the health of people living in Zambia. They do this through supporting and strengthening healthcare in Zambia.

The Global Gala's hope is to build community capacity and raise funds towards health initiatives, supporting outreach clinics, and purchasing medical equipment in Ghana and Zambia.  We have been the sole funding source for a community health clinic in the village of Chanshegu, Ghana. We built it, brought in power and water and furnished it and every year do community health screening. This year we hope to turn it over to Ghana health services. We will use funds to do whatever is still required for this to happen.  In Tamale, Ghana there is a free Shekihna clinic which provides services for the poor mentally ill, it has a fully functioning health clinic and OR; All their services are free and they rely on donations. Some of the funds raised will go towards an orphanage outside of Bolgatanga to provide healthcare and education to their children.  In Zambia these funds have been used to help improve emergency care, prevent children in hospital getting malaria by buying mosquito nets, provided better maternal care by buying fetal monitors and incubators, and many more health initiatives. In the near future OkaZHI hope to develop courses in palliative care, neonatal and maternity care, paediatric care, and first responder training.  One very important aspect of change is ensuring that it can be carried forward and this is done by the future nurses or Zambia and Ghana. With the money raised we provided a nursing student in Ghana and a nursing student in Zambia with a scholarship for a year of education.

Some examples of how your money will be used are: $10 could buy a thermometer, or a child's immunizations, or a mosquito net. With $30 we can buy a blood pressure cuff, or disinfectant and soap for a clinic. $100 could buy a stethoscope  for a hospital unit. $150 will cover the cost of a fetal monitor, essential in making sure baby is doing well in labour. $350 can provide an emergency room with critical medical supplies.

Thank you for all your support with this event!
