Teens Can Build an Airplane!

Donation protected
We are Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 27 and we are teaching High School teenagers how to build and Airplane! We need to raise the remaining funds to complete our RV-12 project. It has been going great since September 2015. The plan is to raise enough money to complete the plane, test fly it, sell it, and use the proceeds to fund the next kit. Thereafter the program will be self sustaining.

The kids are from Wilcox High School, Meriden, CT. They are benefiting in many ways. Not only does math and science come alive through building and flying but they learn how to stay organized, plan ahead, make decisions, work together, and check their work. All things that will benefit them in the future.  Our first "graduating" class included one accepted to aircraft mechanics school, and another two planning on pursuing aviation jobs after college.

Our members are passionate about flying and building aircraft. Many kids have the same passion but it is very difficult for them to get exposure to flight. Our chapter has a teriffic history and ongoing commitment to youth education. We provide tours for school kids at Meriden airport and have run several Boy Scout Aviation Merit Badge classes. See the EAA Chapter 27 Web Site or our  Facebook page for more descriptions of our activities.

A large part of our efforts focus on giving kids ages 8-17 free airplane rides through the EAA Young Eagles program. To date we have provided over 2700 flights to kids. Internationally EAA has flown over 2 million kids. What makes us unique is that we do it one at a time. Each kid receives a walk around the plane with a description of the aircraft major parts, flight controls, and instruments followed by a personal flight in the front seat with a chance to actually fly the plane! Our program is so sucessful our Young eagles coordinator received the 2005 Young Eagles Coordination of the Year from EAA headquarters.

EAA Chapter 27 has sponsored about half a dozen kids to the EAA Air Academy, an aviation summer camp at EAA headquarters in Oshkosh WI. Chapter 27 pays tuition, room, and board for kids who have a strong aviation interest. For less fortunate kids we also have funded travel expenses. The sponsored kids often provide a presentation to the Chapter when they return.

Our chapter programs were viewed so sucessful that EAA head quarters awarded us a completed set of RV-12 wings, the only set awarded, in 2015. But we need to acquire the remaining funding to complete the project.  We are an IRS designated 501c3 charity. Please donate what you can so we can continue and create a self sustaining program.

We have our build sessions at Meriden Airport 9-12 on Sunday mornings, 6-8 on Monday evenings. Our chapter meetings are the third Sunday of the month 10-12. Please stop by if you are in the area. We love to have visitors.

Thank you,
EAA Chapter 27
