HELP SAVE TEDDY AND COCO!

Teddy and Coco are the sweetest souls who unfortunately had a terrible start to life. Coco (approximately 4 years old) was a breeding female, and Teddy (approximately 2) is from her final litter of puppies. Their former "owner" attempted to crop Teddy's ears, but must have done it while he was wide awake because they weren't able to complete the job, leaving one of his ears just barely attached. He also has a small scar on his cheek, so our guess is that the scissors or knife that the breeder was using slipped when he tried to jerk away and slashed his cheek. Maybe due to that botched crop job, Teddy was kept with Coco rather than sold, and both dogs were ultimately surrendered to the shelter earlier this year for "barking too much" in the backyard. They were outside dogs who had never stepped foot in a home or had a family to love them the way they deserve to be loved.

When Pit Crew Sacramento pulled Teddy and Coco from the shelter, they had clearly been severely neglected, and were in the WORST condition. Both dogs had 3rd degree skin infections that left them hairless and bleeding, and it was clear that they had been kept in a small enclosure with little room for movement as their nails had obviously never been cut or given the chance to wear down - they were over an inch long, and had started to grow and cross over one another, making it difficult for these poor babies to  even walk.  Teddy's skin was so bad that we couldn't even pet him when he first arrived as he was oozing from every little wrinkle and fold on his body, and Coco had a tumor the size of an apple hanging off of her front leg.

At first, we thought they had to have demodectic mange, but multiple skin scrapings came back negative. After several months and trials of multiple antibiotics, regular medicated baths, Vitamin E, coconut oil, and salmon oil without much improvement, a visit to a specialist in veterinary dermatology confirmed that Teddy has a staph infection, as well as an auto-immune disorder that makes it difficult for him to overcome that infection. Although we've seen improvement with steroid treatment and Teddy is finally starting to feel well enough to let his adorable, goofy personality show, he still isn't 100% healed and his skin gets red, itchy, and progessively worse when he is taken off of the steroids. He has currently been prescribed a limited diet to determine whether the continued cause of his skin issues and discomfort is due to food allergies, or environmental factors.

Coco's skin condition initially improved with the help of antibiotics, but in recent weeks her progress has declined, and her skin is in worse shape than Teddy's in some areas. Due to her poorly- and closely-cropped ears, she also has a consistent ear infection and yeast build-up in spite of constant cleaning. We'll need to get Coco to the same dermatologist that diagnosed Teddy to determine a course of treatment and obtain the necessary medications.

Teddy and Coco's continued love of adults and kids is a testament to their resilience and sweet nature, given the pain they've endured at the hands of humans in their first few years of life. We are committed to helping them get completely healed, so they can go on to live healthy, happy lives in loving forever homes! The cost of their vet visits and medications over the previous months has mounted, and they will continue to need care and additional treatment in the months to come. Please donate what you can to give Teddy and Coco the fresh start that they deserve!
