Camp Venture - Tea Time Gives Back

Donazione protetta
Who we are and our Goal:

Tea Time for the Homeless
is a non-for profit initiative, which aims to eradicate poverty by providing education to those in need by raising awareness and throwing large social events. Upon completion of raising 30 000$ to build a school in Ethiopia we continue to push forward with our newest initiative. Tea Time has decided to partner up with Ryan Golt, President of Stronger than Stigma, to tie together our initiatives in a new and exciting way. Together, our aim is to help fund Camp Venture, which provides children with mental health concerns and behavioural/emotional difficulties with coping strategies. The camp creates social opportunities through workshops, daily activities and fieldtrips to allow the children to strive in their academics throughout the school year.

The campers range in age from 6-12 years old. Most of the campers have emotional and behavioural difficulties and some also have mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression. Many of the campers come from less fortunate backgrounds and could not otherwise afford to attend a summer camp.

The goals of the camp are to:

1. Provide a structure for pro-social emotional development activities in a recreational setting.

2. Bridge the gap between summer holidays and a new school year.

3. Teach the students something new, thus building a foundation for a continuing confidence in their burgeoning intellectual growth.

Camp Venture:

Camp venture aims to bridge the gap between the summer holidays and the start of the new school year, helping students to transition from their break to the school's structured daily activities. Over the years, Camp Venture has created a program that reflects the best practices in social-emotional learning. The campers are reinforced in important social skills, such as emotional regulation, how to develop and maintain pro-social relationships and problem solving. Innovative arts and crafts activities and physical activities are also a part of each camp day. There is much research to support that recreational activities, as well as music and art, serve therapeutic functions which greatly benefit the students served by this camp.

Education, Mental Health and the Impact of Camp Venture:

In order to engage the students in social and emotional learning at camp, a daily social skill is introduced, defined, demonstrated, and practiced throughout the day. The campers are encouraged to use the daily skill and track the use throughout the camp with a "check mark" system. The daily skills in the past have been listening, good manners, friendship, kindness, cooperation, courage, team work, empathy, and gratitude. The chance to generalize these learned skills is reinforced by the structure of the camp. Ideally the students will realize that the skills are not just applicable in the camp setting, but at school, on a field trip, and most importantly in building relationships when new children and adults come into their lives.

The typical camp day starts with breakfast (served by 2 volunteer campers) and is followed by a discussion of the daily skill. Structured activity stations tailored to the skill or theme of the day are then rotated through before the campers eat lunch. Every afternoon the camp walks down to the local pool to work on swimming and water games. An example of last years schedule can be found below.

As the campers are children with emotional and behavioural difficulties and most come from less fortunate backgrounds, the staff are all qualified professionals who have experience working with this particular clientele. The skilled staff is able to challenge the children to their potential while being mindful of their needs. The staff provides a safe environment where campers can create strong relationships and are comfortable enough to explore new things while safe enough to take risks.
