Team Ruby

$78,930 of $100,000 goal

Raised by 904 people in 10 months
Created July 13, 2017
Around Memorial Day 3 year old Ruby Mae Millea started complaining of knee pain and exhibited low grade fevers.  After several trips to her pediatritian, a mass was finally found above her kidney. On June 27th more extensive tests confirmed that Ruby has Neuroblastoma.
Neuroblastoma is a childhood cancer that starts in the nerve cells. Ruby is currently at Tuft's Children's Hospital in Boston and will contine her approximate year long chemotherapy treatment there.
Michael and Nichole have both taken a leave of absense from their jobs so that they are able to care for Ruby and her 10 month old brother Max.
Every dollar raised here will go directly to medical expenses or cost of living through this time and every dollar helps make a difference in the lives of Ruby, Max, Michael and Nichole.
Let's see how much stress we can unburden them from.  Thank you all.

We did it again!!! Together we have raised $75,000 for Ruby, Max, Nichole and Michael! Thank you all so much. We're not done yet though. Every dollar, every prayer, every word of encouragement has brought us here. Yesterday we got the news that there is NO REMAINING TUMOR in Ruby's abdomen!
We are so hopeful and grateful but there is still a long, tough road ahead and many more months of treatments. Please share, today we are increasing our goal to $100,000. I know we can reach it. We love you Team Ruby!

Team Ruby, we've reached another goal together! Thank you so much.

To update on Ruby's progress:
In October Ruby had an 18 hour surgery to remove the tumor. While her surgical team felt that the surgery went well and was a success, Ruby struggled to recover and remained in PICU for weeks. A second surgery was performed to remove eight inches of her intestine and alleviate complications that arose post initial surgery. Just days ago, Ruby was finally well enough to leave PICU and return to her normal floor and room at the Neely Pediatric Bone Marrow Unit. She is looking great, gaining energy and strength. Yesterday she took some steps and is working with occupational therapists to keep getting stronger. Weeks of not using her limbs have left her a little shaky.
As most of you know, she was given a mailbox and loves to receive cards and artwork. Her address is:

Today we are raising our goal and asking you to re share our page. While Ruby has come so far, there's still a way to go to get her home and well.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Hi Team Ruby! It's been a few days since we reached our goal of $50,000 and we're still just as humbled and grateful as ever. Through careful consideration and research we've decided to increase our goal. Although $50,000 is a huge blessing and an awful lot of help for Ruby and family, to put it simply, they will need much more.
This quote, found on the website http://ascopubs.org (The Journal of Oncology Practice) in an article discussing the results of a study about the financial burden of pediatric cancer for patients and their families, " the challenges of managing the financial costs of cancer in the face of job changes and unplanned hospitalizations may be untenable. This could lead to severe financial repercussions such as bankruptcy, refinancing of homes, loss of independence, and relationship breakdown, which may stress family roles and relationships and have long-term impact on household finances. As the financial costs of cancer accrue for families, efforts must be made to provide support throughout treatment and follow-up", guided us as we decided to ask for more help.
Team Ruby, we are asking once again that you please share this link. So many times we've heard (and thought) "I don't know what I'd do..." or "I wouldn't be able to handle it if it were my child...". I'm suggesting to all of you who have donated and shared and supported thus far that you do know what you would do, and you would be able to handle it, with the guidance, love and support of your family and friends and community. Just as you've proven to Michael, Nichole, Ruby and Max. Thank you forever Team Ruby. Let's keep going. On to the next goal!
