Roderick Sanders (aka) Rod is a 15-year-old student at International Academy of Flint. Rod is a 3.0 GPA student, loves sports, and plays on the school’s football and basketball teams. He also loves attending Sunday church services with his grandmother.

On November 20, 2017, the unexpected happened. While playing basketball, Rod collapsed on the gym floor of his school. He was found to be unresponsive and immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. Once test was run, it was determined that Roderick had a blood clot on the left side of his brain, causing him to faint from multiple strokes. The doctors instantly realized that Roderick needed special attention; so, he was medevacked to Mott’s Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor where they specialize in children’s medicine. Upon arrival, Rod was rushed into surgery to remove the blood clot from his brain. Both strokes impaired his speech, and left him with very little feeling and movement on his right side.

On the day after THANKSgiving, just five short days later, the nurse walks into Rod’s room and this happened……

Nurse: Tell me your name?  Patient: Roderick

BUT GOD!!! Rod’s family, especially his mother Lanisha (Nikki) Price and Grandmother Alison Price couldn’t have been more excited as tears rolled down their faces.

Unfortunately, Rod’s story doesn’t end there. On December 11th, Rod had to undergo another surgery to close the small hole in his heart. This is what caused the blood clot to travel to his brain. Currently, Rod has two filters in place and is on blood thinners to keep the other blood clots in his lungs from traveling and causing future strokes.

Day-by-day, Rod’s speech is improving, and he’s gaining feeling and movement on his right side little-by-little. From the smile on his face, and the laughter that pours from his heart, one couldn’t tell that Roderick still has a very long road ahead of him and so does his mother. Nikki is a single mom with two other teenage boys at home to see about and provide for. While she still must work, she also makes the hour drive to and from the hospital to spend as much time with Rod as she can.

This campaign has been set up to hopefully ease her financial burden. All donations, big or small, will be given to Rod’s mom for the influx of medical bills and unanticipated cost that will come from Rod’s long hospital stay.
