Hello Team Gwen. It is with sadness that I share that Gwen's care has been shifted to in-home hospice. She is sleeping, and her pain is being well managed. The family has requested no visitors at this time.

I have stopped the donations function for this fundraiser. We are eternally grateful for the love and support you all have given.

-------------------------------------------------------

You're giving money to the amazing and fabulous Gwen Edwards, who has been fighting breast cancer since her diagnosis in 2011.

You can find a chronicle of her story at her blog:  https://mylefttit.wordpress.com/

What you won't read on her blog is that recently, Gwen was released from a trial for a drug (PARP Inhibitor BMN 673) that has been quite effective for her since she started it.

After being denied compassionate use by the pharmaceutical company, she is facing limited treatment options. Her oncologist has suggested another similar drug that performs the same function as the previous one. (Lynparza. Generically - Olaparib.)  This similar drug has been FDA approved for ovarian cancer patients but is still pending approval for breast cancer patients, therefore her insurance won't cover the cost of it.

Ready for it? Out of pocket cost is $12,000.

Per month.

And this is just the drug. This price doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of daily expenses when you can't work because you're fighting cancer.

The good news is that your donation in any amount can make a big difference. So gofundGwen;  you'll have her love and gratitude. And the love and gratitude of everyone else who loves her.

Love to all,

Oh, friends. I have incredible news to share with you!

We won.

Biologics just called me. After working closely with my insurance company over the past week, Blue Cross Blue Shield has agreed to cover my Lynparza prescription at 100%. !!!

Deepest thanks to all of you who shared my story and applied social media pressure to these companies and sent letters and made phone calls. All of your efforts have allowed this to happen. Your compassion and encouragement means more to me than you could know.

Also, a giant thank you to everyone who donated monetarily to this cause. I paid $6,000 for the first month's worth of the medication.

Regarding the surplus of donation money... I will use it to pay off remaining cancer debt and also keep a portion in reserve just in case there is some future hiccup with this coverage. Please, if you are uncomfortable with this, contact us so that we may refund your donation. Additionally, anyone who is signed up for a monthly donation, please feel free to stop those automatic payments.

I have been taking the Lynparza for exactly a week and already I can feel the pain in my liver subsiding the same way it did when I started taking the BMN 673 last September. I do believe we have every reason to be optimistic that this treatment will be as effective as the trial was.

Thank you, again, for your kindness and your continued support. In the words of Margaret Mead, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Go Team Gwen!

Alright friends! This is working! The Chief Operating Officer of Biologics called Gwen yesterday. They are working with AstraZeneca (Lynparza's manufacturer) to lower the price of the drug. And now we need to shift our focus to put pressure on AstraZeneca (to lower the drug's price for Gwen) and Blue Cross (to cover the drug as part of Gwen's treatment).

Brooke has done more research and consolidated the contact information and messaging for our campaigns to AstraZeneca & Blue Cross in a google document, which you should all be able to view, copy/paste from and generally use when reaching out to both of these companies. Thanks, Brooke! Go forth, ‪#‎TeamGwen‬!

I only know Gwen through my son who met her in Roanoke and our connection through the Avett Brothers. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. My heart aches for those who knew and loved her and were touched by her story.

Sending love, light and prayers to Gwen -- a gentle soul with the heart of a warrior -- and to her loving family. Sadly I had to miss the Labor Day cookout, but if there is anything I can do now or later please let me know.

I am sad to hear that Gwen will be leaving us behind, but I am relieved to hear her pain is being managed. I did not know her except through her work at Barter and through her friend Eugene Wolf. A great and lovely spirit.

I just sent a letter to them via their online portal. I edited the suggested text to make it clear that it was not just a copy and paste but a letter someone who cares about it took some time with. They do notice that. Let's inundate them with mail.
