For a small donation, you could be part of the BIGGER PICTURE when it comes to improving our planet’s sustainability for the future.
Educating and acting is what really counts – Here’s your chance to help!

A $25 contribution represents:
-Your support for international change in encouraging women to take on leadership roles in global STEMM fields -  in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine.
-Your consideration regarding how you want your children to see our planet.
-A reminder of how much you and your family care about our world’s fragile environment, and most importantly, how you helped change it!

You’ll receive an exclusive certificate. A unique piece of the puzzle that is Homeward Bound Project 2018. By all of us acquiring a piece of the responsibility and acting on it, the potential for real change exponentially grows.

If you’ve ever wanted to be a part of something significant, meaningful and stand up for this wondrous planet, secure your puzzle piece certificate today!

Together, with all of the puzzle pieces we can make changes for the better.

Globally, women are underrepresented in leadership roles. This is not a new problem, but the pace of change has been incredibly slow. This is particularly the case in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEM).  In Australia, whilst women fill almost half of all junior positions, they hold only a fifth (20.6%) of senior positions. The non-inclusion of women at these levels is not only a significant waste of knowledge, talent and different perspectives; it is also an issue of equity.

We are passionate scientists who want to help care for the planet on which we live and to address the problem of gender equity.  We will do this by taking part in the Homeward Bound initiative (https://homewardboundprojects.com.au/).  This program aims to heighten the influence and impact of women in STEM to influence the policy and decision-making that shapes our planet. This year, 70 women (including us!) are participating in a yearlong leadership program that culminates in a three-week intensive training expedition to Antarctica. This training includes leadership and strategic planning training as well as cutting edge science education program incorporating the most up to date and relevant research about the state and functioning of our planet – all delivered by experts in their field.

The programme costs each participant US$40,000, a significant proportion of which is covered by very kind sponsors and donors. We must raise US$16,000 each (approx. AU$21,000) plus the costs of our flights, accommodation, visas etc. We need sponsorship from organisations and individuals who are willing to support the fight for equity and the fight for our planet, and we have some awesome perks for those who help us to raise the funds!

A little bit about us...

Justine

I am a post-graduate student at the University of Tasmania studying a Master of Antarctic and Marine Science – and absolutely love it! I also run a very small business wowing four-year old preschool children with the wonders of science and assisting their teachers to include more science into their program. I am passionate about science communication and have developed activities to engage secondary students in current science issues. I have three young daughters whom I expect will take over the world one day ;-)

I work in science because it is so interesting! I have a natural curiosity for working out how and why things happen. Antarctic science, in particular, is critical for monitoring and predicting global climate change impacts which are happening at a rate that is hard to keep up with. Studying (and hopefully, one day working in) Antarctic science is my way of contributing to our global community without having to be around any blood and guts!

I am really excited (and nervous) about being a part of the next Homeward bound journey. Homeward bound - as daunting as it seems at the moment, will hopefully give me the skills, confidence and inspiration I need to communicate the importance of Antarctic science to the wider community. I would love to see Antarctic science being taught in all secondary schools in Australia and I am working towards this goal.

I am a research fellow in ecosystem based management at the University of Tasmania. It took me a long time (and an administration job in a marine science research institute) to realise that research was what I wanted to do with my life - but I love it!  Originally from Scotland, I moved to Tasmania just over a year ago and now I don't ever want to leave.

My research focuses on how we use ocean and coastal natural resources and why we fight over them.  I have worked with a variety of industries including fishing, aquaculture and marine renewable energy.  I firmly believe that if we can resolve some of the challenges and tensions between how people and governments interact/work together - then we can manage our oceans and coasts in the best way possible!

Conflict research relating to the oceans and coasts is still in its infancy and I really want to build up this important work by building my own research team and this is where Homeward Bound comes in!  I'm hoping that this fantastic opportunity will help me to work on the leadership skills and confidence that I need to grow this area of research and highlight its importance to the world.  I also want to use the skills I develop to inspire and mentor other (particularly female) early career researchers!
