Anybody who knows our dad, Chuck Schlemmer, knows the kind of person he was. We, his children, of course know him as a great father and devoted husband to our mom, Cyndi. Whether you know him as a teacher, coach, friend, mentor, or even just an acquaintance, we all know his kindness and inspirational presence in our hometown community. Simply put, he touched so, so many lives in one positive way or another.
Friday evening, August 16th, 2019, a drunk driver struck him while he was out riding his bike. He has been in the ICU at Parkview Regional Hospital since then, with a number of broken bones, collapsed lung, and extensive trauma to his head that has left him with no activity in his brain.
Our family has decided to take him off life support, due to the severity of the brain injury and the fact that in the extremely rare instance that he even would ever wake up again, he would never be anywhere near the person we all know him as, and he could never live without constant care in a bedridden state—which we all know he would never want.
Given what we know about the driver that struck him, at this point we don’t expect to be able to get any kind of settlement to help cover the medical costs and future well-being of our mom.
We have greatly appreciated the amazing outpouring of support and messages and memories we have received. He is so loved, and we know that. Many have asked how they can help. We haven’t seen any medical bills yet, but we know any gift you can offer will help us handle the burden.
In the case that insurance covers all the costs adequately, any additional funds raised here will go towards a scholarship that our mom and us would like to set up in his name.
We greatly appreciate that others wanted to set up a gofundme campaign shortly after the community initially found out about the accident, but we preferred to set up our own to be able to give you a more clear explanation of the situation. We thank you so much in advance, whether you can give even $1 or just offer a kind word.
