Team Manny - Cancer Sucks Fund

From the parents of Manny:

I have never thought of starting a go fund me account, I have never had the need to.  However, that all changed when my son Manny, 8 years old and a 3rd grader at Tombaugh Elementary was diagnosed with high grade Osteosarcoma in his leg, on November 14, 2016.  He has now undergone 9 weeks of chemotherapy at UNM Children’s Hospital in Albuquerque. He needs 1 more week of chemo, then will be followed by surgery, then several more months of chemotherapy.  He will be in treatment for a total of 7 months to a year, and will miss the rest of his 3rd grade year at Tombaugh.

He has a 70% chance of survival.  Parents are supposed to go before their kids!  It hurts my heart to think that I may lose him!   Manny has always been physically active, he loves basketball and football, and dreams of becoming an NBA player, like his idol Stephen Curry.

Manny will be home schooled during this time, since his defenses are affected by chemo and he is susceptible to infection.  As of this time, we are not sure what surgery he will have, one surgeon has suggested amputation, but we will have a second opinion done in Denver, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

I have always been a hard worker and some would actually call me a workaholic, however, I am now on intermittent FMLA, so that I can be with my son during his treatments.  Manny's treatments as stated earlier are in Albuquerque, which is a 3-4-hour drive.  He is usually in the hospital for 4-5 days with each treatment.  I am able to work 1 maybe 2 days a week.  I have exhausted my PTO, and sick leave and medical bills are piling up.  I have had many people encouraging me to start a go fund me account, but my pride had gotten in the way.  I now realize that it's not about me, it's about my son, and getting him the medical care he so desperately needs, also being able to pay insurance premiums so that he can continue to receive care.  Any amount you can afford is appreciated and will help us.  We thank you for your support from the bottoms of our hearts, while we battle this horrible disease.  Please keep us in your prayers, and especially Manny.

Much love, Jose and Diana Lopez.
