Team Jim’s fight against Cancer

Donation protected
Hello,

Jim’s daughter Brittany here. Thank you for your interest in our fundraiser! The purpose of this fundraiser is to help with the extensive costs of healthcare related to cancer.

Here’s a little of our story: My dad has never been hospitalized with any medical problems in his entire life. He just turned 55 on 1/14/18. He is an extremely hard worker and has been for the last 26 years at his job with Arrow Uniform. His days consisted of working 10-12 hour shifts 5 days a week with a lot of heavy lifting. Early this year, he decided to use a weeks vacation to make appointments with the Chiropractor in attempt to fix some back and hip pain he was having. At one of these appointments the doctor noticed a mass on my Dad’s neck that had randomly popped up. He went in for a CT and we got the news that it may be Lymphoma....

As you can imagine, this news was already devastating, but there was a “density” in the brain that was cut off in the CT that they needed to evaluate further. Upon another CT and MRI on 1/23/18, our diagnosis changed. My dad was diagnosed with lung cancer with metastasis to the brain and bones. We couldn’t believe it... as he was overall symptom free and healthy. How did this spread so fast and we had no clue?? As if that weren’t enough, since then, adenocarcinoma has been added to the diagnosis and “lymphoma is yet to be excluded.”  We are extremely saddened that the cancer has spread this much without giving us a chance to attack it earlier.

On 2/1/18, Dad had a craniotomy to remove the brain tumor and has been in Neuro ICU the last two days recovering. The tumor was sitting on the motor cortex in the brain causing numbness in his right fingers. The surgery was successful, thank goodness, but this is only the beginning.  Since surgery he hasn’t been able to move his right hand, which will hopefully return with time and physical therapy (as he is right handed). Here is a picture of his head post op (sorry if you’re squeamish!)

For now, biopsies have been sent and the medical team is deciding what chemotherapy and radiation to use once his brain heals to target all the types of cancer within. That is where we stand.

A diagnosis like this is extremely life altering. Dad has been off work for 3 weeks and will be receiving disability for medical leave. Mom has been on spousal leave- with no pay. The bills from various scans have already been arriving, in addition to the surgery costs, nights in the hospital, and all of the treatment and therapy to come....

For funding, we just set the goal high, as the sky is the limit and anything helps. We are so grateful for the support we have been getting already and are appreciative to those who choose to help us in this manner. You have no idea how much you all mean to us and it warms our hearts to have you as a part of #TeamJim! I will continue to update as we tackle this cancer head on and remain #SchlimStrong!
