Team Debbie - Kicking Cancer's Butt Since 2009

Cancer sucks.
After a lifetime of working as an LPN and nearly losing her job following Hurricane Katrina, Debbie graduated from nursing school in May 2009. After several grueling years, she was ready to kick back for a while. Life has a funny way of not caring about our plans. Her mammogram that October came back abnormal, and kicked off the fight of her life.
She beat breast cancer in 2010.
She beat it when it came back in her liver in 2012.
She beat it when it came back in her lymph nodes in 2016.
In June of 2017, it came back in the lining of her abdomen. We almost lost her twice, but like the warrior she is, she fought back.
After it spread in June of 2018, Debbie found out that she was positive for the BRCA1 breast cancer gene, opening new pathways for treatment options. That September, it spread to her reproductive organs.
After nearly a decade of fighting and a lifetime of caring for others, Debbie finally retired from Tulane University Hospital and Clinic this January. While she no longer has the stress of trying to fit chemo into her work schedule, she no longer has access to her employer-provided health insurance and will not qualify for Medicare until 2020. Medical bills and living expenses continue to climb, and the stress of working has been swapped for the stress of surviving.
Although the road has been arduous both physically and emotionally, Debbie is blessed with the most supportive friends and family, and an amazing medical team who have been fighting right alongside her.
