Teaching Kids to Fly RC Airplanes

Donation protected
The Sedalia RC Flyers club offers a free Learn to fly program for kids and adults. We provided all the equipment and also have a 2 computer based flight simulators. Students learn about the airplane control surfaces and how they interace which the plane. We have 2 electric powered radio controlled planes and associated equipment.  Both the instructor  and student have controllers that are connected together wirelessly. If the student incounters a problem the instructor can take control, correct the problem and return control to the student. Using this method insures success.

History: Sedalia RC Flyers was established and charted with the Academy of Model Aeronautics in 1990 and incorporated as Not for Profit in 2014. The club consists of both new and experienced pilots who fly various type aircraft which includes planes, helicopters and drones.

Below: One of our instructors explains the effects of the airplane control surfaces before the student flies.

Below: Student flies with an instructor using a buddy box system. The buddy box uses 2 transmittlers connected wirelessly.

We are limited in the number of students we can teach since we only have a few airplane batteries and need electricity to recharge the batteries. We don’t want kids to go away disappointed because they didn’t get to fly.  We want them to be able to complete several flights during the day. We also need electric for other things such as interior and exterior lighting and a sound system.

We have permission to connect to a nearby power distribution panel and run a line to our building which would cost $ 1,377.00 for materials and renting a trencher. Club members will do the installation once we have the materials. One of our member’s is a qualified electrician who will supervise the project.

Our club only has 19 members and the dues have to go to pay for use of the land , insurance for the land owner, and a per event fee for flying events we host throught out  the flying season so extra funds for running electricity to our building is nonexistent.

Please donate so we can teach more people at our Learn-to-Fly session by being able keep a supply of  charge batteries so we can keep flying and have lighting when it starts to get dark.

In the past few years club members have been invited to give a presentation on airplane control surfaces and how they affect airplanes at theJunior High. We also gave a presentation with a displane of several different type aircraft and handed out gliders at a Cub Scout 2 day summer camp.

Last year we held a kid’s day event where we designed games for the kids , gave prizes to everyone, and each kid received a foam plate glider and a helicopter made from card stock. The entire event was free.

Below: At the kids day event the kids got there picture taken flying with Snoopy.

Below: This is a board we made by a club member for kids to stand behind and get pilots license photo during kids day.

All of our flying events are free for spectators. At these events we answer a lot of questions and people get to see several different types of aircraft fly.

Kids up to age 16 get a free membership to our club and the Academy of Model Aeronautics (http://www.modelaircraft.org/)  gives a free membership through age 19.

Please donate to so we can help the most kids get outside and learn to fly radio controlled aircraft. The rewards are many.  We’ll make every dollar count to create an experience our kids won’t forget.
