UPDATE:  I’d like to offer a fun incentive/thank you for your generosity: The person who donates the most will get a private piano concert late this summer with appetizers and cocktails prepared from recipes from Chicago’s most famous cocktail lounge — The Aviary! Tell everyone!

As most of you know, I've been hoping to attend the Suzuki Festival in Lima, Peru, for the fourth year in a row. While, sadly, I wasn't able to find the funding needed in time for Peru this year, I have an exciting opportunity that is a wee bit closer to home: to give a presentation at the first ever Suzuki Conference of all the Americas, which is being held in Mexico in May. My presentation is titled: Suzuki Therapy: How music lessons can help cure our modern-day anxieties, distractions, and other first-world maladies.

In today’s age of social media and cell phone addiction, when community is shaped by your Facebook feed, and a time when kids and adults alike are experiencing an inability to be alone brought about by technology, how could you expect someone to tolerate starting from scratch every day? To tolerate spending time alone every day? To feel proud having devoted an entire hour to a passage of music when there are texts to answer, instagrams to post, and your teachers and bosses expect to be able to reach you at all times?

So many chronic mental health issues in today’s society can be addressed in music lessons. We all know that music study improves self-esteem, it teaches overcoming obstacles and setting goals, and it brings respect and a loosening of ego into daily life. My presentation to the parents and teachers at this conference will be on how you can focus that power to make a more lasting impact.

I have already raised some of the money, based on the generous donations of my friends and family. What I didn't use for Peru will be going to the necessities for this trip: conference registration, plane ticket, hotel and transportation (courses are included in the registration fee!).

The festival is in May and I need to book my flight and lodging soon. Just $50 from 20 people will cover the plane ticket and hotel. I hope to reach this goal by the end of March. Thank you so much for your support!

** Any funds acquired above my necessary personal funds will be donated to the annual Festival Suzuki de Peru for funding future festivals and projects (including such projects as supporting teachers in rural Peru via Skype, providing instruments to underserved communities, and funding the education of the newly accessible Cuban teachers at such festivals).

Hello All!

I wanted to give you an update on where I am with my Mexico trip…….

I’m set to go! I didn’t quite reach my GoFundMe goal, but I’ve figured out a way to make it happen, and I couldn’t have done it without you!

I give my presentation to the Suzuki members of the Americas in attendance at this conference this coming week and I’ve been hard at work on making sure it will be accessible and helpful to everyone. If you want to see a synopsis as well as the PowerPoint slides that go along with my presentation, you can go to www.aubreyfaithslaker.com/suzuki-therapy.

I’ll try to get out of the classroom and the conference center a bit while I’m there, and hope to have some beautiful pictures to share with you!

Thanks again—you guys are the best!
Wish me luck!

Hello All!

Good news! My teacher trainer application has been accepted and I am going to be a Suzuki Piano Teacher Trainer soon! I also just won an award through the Music Teachers Association that I’ll be accepting in Spokane, Washington next month. This is a really exciting time, but all of it comes with a bit of a cost. And as all of my musician friends know, the rewards of this career are great, but they are certainly not monetary!

My friends, family, and colleagues have been wonderful in donating. And I’m writing this time to ask you to share my project and needs with YOUR friends and colleagues! I’m still needing about $1200 to make this happen. Please share this on Facebook with a personal note of support, or include the link to my fundraiser in a personal e-mail to your community (ie. everyone you’ve ever met).

I’d like to offer a fun incentive/thank you for your generosity: The person who donates the most will get a private piano concert late this summer with appetizers and cocktails prepared from recipes from Chicago’s most famous cocktail lounge — The Aviary! Tell everyone!
