Bring English to Everest

*Revision as of May 27th 2019

I am thankful for the support I received through everyones donations.  I almost reached half my goal  of $2000 which is amazing.  However, due to limited funding, I have chosen a program that fits more into my current budget range.  I will no longer be teaching in the mountains of Nepal but instead volunteering at an orphanage teaching English in Kathmandu, the Capital of Nepal.

Although I was unable to achieve my campaign goal I know the children in the orphanage in Kathmandu will be very happy for the support.

My new goal is to raise $1,000 dollars by June 30th.

****************************************************************************************************************************
In 2015 I traveled to Nepal on a Backpacking trip.  I noticed that in the remote mountain areas there are few local schools. Children don't often get a formal education because a lack of resources and a lack of teachers. I want to go back to Nepal and teach at a local school in the village of Ghat, Located in the Himalayan mountains. From Ghat it's a 3 day hike to Everest base camp.

The Solumkhumbu  region of Nepal is difficult to access because it is more than 9,500 feet above sea level. So education materials and teachers are in short supply.

There are no drivable roads, the only reasonable way for local people to get there is by walking.  People port many supplies by basket. So being a "porter" is a popular job. I want to bring the students educational supplies such pencils and notepads. Then I plan to teach in Pema Choling School for 4 weeks.

Tourism accounts for 2.9% of total employment in Nepal, over 427,00 jobs.  English is a useful subject to learn because it is directly tied to this big industry. It will benefit the students to learn and use English with a native speaker.

My job is to teach the Everest English class at Pema Choling School which is focused on practical use of English.
Debate, discussion and storytelling are a just a few of the classes I will teach.  I will also teach extracurricular classes such as art, sport and how to use computers.

During my stay I will be living with a host family. I will learn the local culture in my free time and help them around the house. I'll also eat the local food with them during meal times. Lunch and dinner are mostly dal (lentil soup), bhat (rice) and vegetable curry. Potato soup is also very common.

Your contribution will provide:
-School materials for students
-Education for students who don't have the opportunity to study in Katmandu schools
-Opportunity to share different culture and customs

My Goal is to raise $2,000 dollars by June 30th.  I also want to get 500 people to like my page (https://www.facebook.com/Bring-English-to-Everest-378611872937301/?modal=admin_todo_tour)
